OM617 MW, How To Access IP Rear Cover For Tuning?

Hello I just purchased a 1983 300D OM617, I have been researching on how to tune the MW pump, I have found a few very helpful threads on how to tune the pump but, I haven't found very clear instructions on how to remove the rear cover for tuning.

I have read that some remove the oil filter housing to access the bolts to remove the cover and some don't even remove the housing to tune the pump?

Whats the easiest way to gain access to tune the pump? I tried to remove the oil filter housing, tonight but I didn't get very far as I couldn't remove the oil outlet and inlet hoses (they are stuck on there LOL) ,it was dark so I called it a night and plan to work on it tomorrow.

How many bolts hold the oil filter housing to the engine? and how to access?

Sorry for the very N00bish question, if I am going in the wrong direction and have my info all messed up, please feel free to correct me.

Thanks in advance.

Don't worry about noob questions. I've done mechanical work for over 50 years and still come here for Mercedes-specific questions. You'll get all sorts of input from simple, matter-of-fact to "you must run Mercedes air in your tires or the car won't run properly" - take all the input you can get and stir with your own experience.

Unfortunately, I'm no help on your specific question as I haven't done this operation on mine. Hopefully one of the guys will chime in here and give specific input.

Let me offer that I've decided to go with bigger injectors from Greazzer and have one of his spiffy high-pressure fuel system springs that will go in in a day or so. There's a LOT I'd do before I start messing with what's inside the pump. The real answer here is to get a Dieselmeken or Maya pump from Sweden which will have all the groovy tweaks. To properly modify a Diesel injection pump takes a very expensive test bench and the skill to operate it correctly in addition to knowing what to change so fiddling around in there yourself is pretty hit or miss. I'm saving up for my Dieselmeken pump - about $1500 is required.

Best of luck!

Dan

Lance, AKA Forced Induction, and now DenverW123 are one and the same.

The Supertrurbodiesel forum has info on fooling with the inside of the Fuel Injection Pump.

You will need what I remember as a 24mm Wrench that has a thinned head to squeeze it between the Oil Filter Housing and the Oil Cooler Hose Nut (which is 27mm, 1-1/16" of an inch).

You need to hold the circled in the pic fittings with a 24mm thin headed wrench while you turn off the 27mm Oil Cooler Hose Nuts.

It is even more important to hold them when you put Tighten the Hose Nuts as one member had the hose nut and fitting turn together the extent that it cracked the Oil Filter Housing.

Those oil fittings are bastards-you're openign a can of worms.

Remove the shutoff valve, then you can pull the rear cover WITHOUT taking off the oil filter housing.

Replace all the flathead screws with allen heads and use a ball-ended wrench.

Oh yeah, you're going to need a mirror too

If you want to alter your pump then take it off the engine and tweak it- then re-install. Far easier that way.
