Question about MW superpump om617
 

Have a nice extra MW pump from my 85 SD engine. Thinking about shipping it to Diesleminken to build into a superpump 7.5 elements. Have a few questions about it for anyone that might know them.

First, before you ask... yes it's a MW pump. Yes he has gotten some new elements for the MW pump and stated that it should be ready about September after some testing. Why and MW? cause I already own an extra.

Ok, what I'm wondering is drive-ability. I'm not adding this to engine to make it a hot rod, just to give me more oomph as a daily driver. Car will still have stock turbo, and stock auto. It's an 85 300TDT Euro, but the gearing is a little lower than the US version of the 85. Have to get under car and look for exact rear. But I've had 2 other 85's and can tell the difference. Feels more like my 83 did.

Should I be worried about the auto trans? If I don't hot rod car it should be fine right?

I don't want car "rolling coal" I'm assuming I can still control the smoke via the ALDA... stock or (I don't know if he makes an external version like the OM603 pump yet)

Car currently cruises at 80 85mpg comfortably and feels like there is plenty to go if I pushed it.

MPG should stay around the same as long as I keep foot out of peddle I would guess...?

I guess it's kind of new territory, so I'm just wondering if anyone has experience doing something similar.

did he tell you what elements those are? Like taken from another engine, correct cam lift and so on?

If the pump is set right you don´t need an external ALDA as the stock ALDA will work correctly up to 2bar of charge pressure.
But the fuel delivery curve will have to be low enough so the bigger elements won´t flood your engine and make your car become a smoke grenade or sound like a knock machine.... :D

If your gearbox is a 722.315 it will most likely work up to 180HP and ~350Nm as the same gearbox was used with the V8 engines in the W107.
You will have to change some settings, but then it should work.
But as you have a car from 1985 it will probably have the later gearbox with the blue pressure transmitter valve.
There were different versions of gearboxes with that valve.

I have a ton of confidence in Goran so if he says it'll work, it'll work.

There's an advantage to the MW pump in that you won't have to rework the injector lines and linkage like I did. However, it does not have easily accessible adjustments like the M pump unless Goran makes other modifications - which he might.

If I were in your shoes I'd shoot for about 180 HP or so. That's not too crazy and I'd expect it to yield great drivability that's easy to live with. I'm pretty sure Goran can adjust the pump on his bench to result in pretty close to that power output - he knows how much fuel flow at how many RPM=XXX HP, pretty closely. Too much HP might extract your slushbox (says the guy who went to a 4-speed).

I don't know if he can preset the timing like he did on my M pump. That went really easily - put the engine on #1 TDC, drop the pump in, and remove the pump locking bolt. Maybe there's a way to do the MW like that, too.

If you're worried about the transmission, add an extra cooler.

If the transmission slips, increase the band pressure(there's a writeup on the forums here)

Don't overheat it, and don't do any gear slams(winding the engine in neutral and then slapping the shifter into drive).


EDIT: I'd have him tune it for 250hp personally. IIRC, you can just dial the external alda back to limit yourself until you get a bigger turbo. Props for getting the pump done first(the hard part). Turbo swaps are cheap if you go the junkyard route.

Hello We did get the first edition of our MW7,5mm last week, did some test and it need some small changes before I can release them. I guess a pump modification of the MW OM617 pump will cost around 800usd + shipping. New series will come home i September if all goes as planned.

whats your opinion on drive ability after new pump? IF I keep original turbo, what about stock auto? currently I drive car everyday, run 80-85mph 100 miles a day to work. Not looking for a race car, just more oomph for it. Also, was about alda, I don’t want car rolling coal (smoking). does your alda solution correct this?

Smoke on power engines are always a small problem but if you drive carefully and meet the boost with the throttle you can go almost smokefree. Its when you push the throttle to max you roll coal

So sound like if I drive normal, I should not have to much of an issue. The car is already the fastest smoothest running om617's I have owned, but it would be nice to have a little more "passing" power. I'll be sending the MW pump from my other om617 engine, since it looks almost like new. that way I don't have any real down time with the car.

ngarover - I have a spare pump from my '85 if you want to send it to Goran and keep your other car in service until the new pump is ready. Just give a shout as the MW is just sitting here doing nothing. Goran supplied the M pump so I ended up with the old one and no use for it (it worked fine on the engine).

Besides, it's a good excuse to drive to Wilmington and hang out for a day or so. Great town!

Turns out there is no record from Metric Motors that they rebuild it... It's an engine I got from Terry Meger after his passing That was had been rebuilt (according to him and his son) but I have no paper work on it. I had it in a car for about 6500 miles before tranny went. it's been sitting since. If story about rebuild is correct, it should have about 10K on it. if not... who knows. Strong engine, got the best MPG I've ever gotten out of a om617 @ 32mpg in the white 85 sedan I had it in.

Whatever happened with this? I'm interested in sending him my extra MW pump. Ive just been a little busy with other parts of my life

When he did mine I asked if I should find an M pump here and ship it over and he said he could buy cores locally for less than the cost of shipping so I had him do that. Might want to check before boxing yours up - evidently the price of the core is not a big player.

Turbo 617 MW pumps maybe a rarity in Europe.

The MW pump 7.5 mm element development is Dieselmeken's side project that has slowly been moving along.

He did post a video on 11/28/2016 of the first actual running OM617 with his new 7.5 mm MW pump elements ...so once he sorts out the fine tuning of the pump, we can place our orders.

I have a Myna "M" pump in my 617 and love it. Stock turbo with a small blackstone IC atop the turbo and stock exhaust. I figure I'm about 175-180 hp. 0-60 time is 9 seconds. Transmission does not slip. If I didn't have that I'd be getting a modified MW.
