I think I said it in another post, but someone has one in the classified here, unless it sold.
BTW the ones that are on the 230 717.401 are similar gl275 getrag but the starter hole is on the opposite side so they wont fit. They have identical internals. Also the 280sl 717.402 the most popular and available version has an electric speedometer drive with the starter in the correct place for a 617. You can swap the speedometer drive. I believe tail r&r would be in order for that. AFAIK standard mechanical speedo drive from most gear boxes of that same year will fit, including automatic transmissions. Always verify with a part numbers cross check. I have the diagrams and a good book for this gearbox if needed.

Yes sorry quite right, the later 230s had the M102 which had the starter on the other side (first of the newer generation engines)
I don't know if the early 230s with the M115 had 5 speeds as an option, maybe the 717.000 was

It's not worth it for the .13 reduction. Just stick with the 4speeds and be prepared for replacements. None of the diesel trans were torque rated for the turboed diesel. It would make more sense to put a 602 in and leverage the many manual.trans options the 60x gives you.

4sp vs 5 sp
Quote:
This is an interesting point. The 4sp tranny's are cheap and readily available versus the 5sp which are very rare. The OPer's car is an 85' which means it has the one year 2.88 diff which is an excellent start. ------axle ratio- tire diameter- tranny ratio- veh speed- rpm 4sp--- 2.88------- 24.7----------- 1.0---------- 70mph--- 2742 5sp--- 2.88------- 24.7----------- .87---------- 70mph--- 2386 -----------------------------------------------------Difference 356 I never use 5th gear except on freeways, it cruises nicely at 2400 rpm's but 2800 wouldn't be that bad.

I have read about the gl275 717 400 401 etc taking quite a bit of torque. On account one a 717.401, starter on left, was behind a modified 60x with over 400nm of torque. The other account is with the 717.404 , which has the same torque rating and grouping, behind a modified m103 16valve. The guy finally toasted his gearbox doing burnouts. These are pretty strong boxes I believe.
I have read the torque ratings on a few of the boxes from the straight four, five and six engines of the eighties to mid nineties and they all top out at 275nm although they will take a bit more. Im referring to the ones with designations of717.40x, 717,43x, 44x and so on. They are group gl76-27-5. i believe made by mercedes in house.
