Getrag 717.400

Extremely rare, probably have to get one from EU somewhere. Expect to pay about $1500 delivered. Then you'll need a lot of other stuff including the 38 lb flywheel.

BiodieselMB 05-28-2017 02:31 AM

I know of a 4-speed that is available. Can you elaborate on the flywheel and other differences?

greazzer 05-28-2017 07:56 AM

The FW is a "38 pounder" although they actually weigh a smidge less. I have a possible sale of one;however, if that falls thru or I don't hear back from the person by Tuesday, PM. I got it boxed and ready to go.

1985 300TDT black with nice leather

I have only just yesterday purchased the car and I need to get an understanding of the parts that need to be found.
Can you please list the other unusual items needed?

greazzer 05-28-2017 11:10 AM

There are numerous threads out there, so I won't re-invent the wheel.

You will need:

Pedal assembly (can use 4 speed from W123 diesel)
Front Section of DS
Trans cross-member
Shift linkages
The shifter
717.400 trans (only known drop in for diesel engine)
"38 pounder" FW

The above are the main items. I may have left some gizmos left out,

please let me know if you still have the fly wheel by the end of the day.
the timeframe has moved forward and we can start the job this week.
need to find the 717.400

Flywheel sold !

Assuming you cannot find a donor car with the real 5 speed Getrag 717.400, then your next option is finding a complete kit, with the key word being "complete."

Then, of course, is buying it like the Johnny Cash song ... "One Piece at a Time"

BiodieselMB 05-30-2017 07:39 AM

do you know which cars the 717.400 were in?

greazzer 05-30-2017 08:28 AM

In the diesel family of engines, OM616 and OM617, so those cars which had those engines. Plus, you can find the iron 5 speeds in the prior models however the latter are more rare.

Keep in mind you do have work-arounds.

You can fab / modify the front section of the DS, and that cost should be around $200.00 or so at a driveshaft shop.

You can fab / modify the shift linkages from the 4 speed, and that should cost you around $100

The trans cross member is NLA, but you can use the 4 speed auto (I think that is the one, going off the top of my head).

The pedal assembly is the same in 4 speed.

The few things which cannot be mod'd or swapped from others is the shifter and tranny itself.

So, if you find the tranny, then the only thing needed to complete the package is the shifter as the other items do have workarounds.

Is that european OM616 &617 engine cars?

greazzer 05-30-2017 02:59 PM

May not necessary be European engine cars. The real Euro cars and more precisely their engine blocks are drilled for the Sanden AC set up. However, you can find the Getrag 717.400 in engine blocks which accept the US A/C set up. So, Euro engine cars would not be the deciding factor. I don't know if any cars destined for the US originally had the 5 speed.

BiodieselMB 05-30-2017 11:57 PM

I have heard not. In my limited experience it seems that they were all european. Can you tell me the full part number?

How is your super fast 175+ model coming along? You are the most active and experienced member of our family that I have found.

They were sold mated with petrol engines as well, at least 280/280E and possibly 230/230E cars
