Better turbo

Any suggestions on better turbo for 603.960, 1987 300TD ? Original is Garrett in need of rebuilding and I am looking for something better which hopefully won't blow engine to pieces.

Are you planning to turn the fuel up or run a superpump? If not, more turbo won't help you much if any. The stock IP tune is pretty well maxed out at ~14PSI which a healthy stock turbo should easily deliver.

A rebuild would likely be best for stock power. Perhaps with the rebuild you could upgrade the turbine wheel.
If you feel like doing some customizing an He221, HX30 or TD05 (or even a bigger TD04) would best best, again for stock to 230ish hp with similar spool times or better.

What the 87 om603 really needs is a better exhaust manifold.

Is the turbo the same for both exhaust manifolds ?

Both have T3 flanges so any T3 or the original kkk will bolt up. The turbo needs to be clocked differently.

The non egr manifold has m10 studs in it and the 50 trim and kkk turbos have m8 studs in them

M10 size holes are standard across all t3 flange turbos these days. The M8 studs on 87s are the odd man out and easy to convert. Both manifolds have an EGR port.

Ah, yes egr. I was being lazy and meant w140

he 341 with an external waste gate so i could run lower boost and get way better drive pressures than the stock wg. once i choke out this turbo ill get the compressor milled out as well as the exhaust housing and hopefully run hx40turbin and the biggest billet wheel that fits.

realistically your not going to get the benefit of a large turbo (hx35+)with out building a manifold. the stock one are just too restrictive/tuned to the small turbos. too small to flow more they they already do with out tremendous heat.

realistically tho if you dont or cant build a manifold any turbo slightly larger than the mercedes turbo will probably be an improvement. something along the lines of a "300hp honda turbo" is what i would start looking for if those were my criteria.
crappy honda turbos about this size..

small burnout

manifold (has a bad word so mute it)
