om606 mild build info
Currently have a 98 e300 with a 3" turbo back exhaust and rocketchip stage 2 tune. Can i swap in a hx35 without my EGT skyrocketing?

EGT's are a function of timing and A/F ratio. Swapping in a bigger turbo won't increase power any if you don't turn up the fuel too. If the A/F ratio is good, your EGT's will be ok too. EGT rises when timing is late, injection duration is too long (making timing late), or excess fuel is injected for the air in the combustion chamber.

The turbo 606 isn't that different from the turbo 603 mechanically other than 24V vs 12V. You still have a mechanical injection pump, although with electronic controls for the rack instead of a mechanical throttle linkage. You have a fixed geometry turbo with a vacuum operated wastegate controlled by the ECU. You have an EGR valve. You have an ECU that controls the EGR, the electronic throttle, and the boost control. Fuel enrichment is performed via a pressure transducer and controlled electronically by the ECU instead of mechanically by the ALDA. On a stock system, the chipped ECU changes the electronic throttle PIDs, the EGR control loop, and the wastegate controls.
Your fuelling is still a function of the internal setting of the mechanical part of the injection pump and your injection duration is a function of the size of the pumping elements in the injection pump. No mod chip is going to change those parts of the equation, the electronic parts of the IP can only respond to the limits of the mechanical settings. Swapping in a different turbo may change your max boost and it may change the spool time, but unless you have a way to increase the fuelling of the IP, you won't make any more power. The ECU should be responding to boost pressure in the manifold. With the stock or modified tune, you should not have issues with EGT's even if you're making more boost. |
Normal HX35 like from the dodge trucks is too big for the stock pump. Not saying it won't work but it'll be hella slow to spool unless you get the IP built. HX32 might be good. HY35 would spool quicker but probably not an optimal choice for this setup.

I bet a Garrett .57 trim T3/T4 turbo would be a great fit, quick spool and capable of 400ft/lbs.

As far as I know, the stock pump can max out at 90cc, maybe 100. I dont know what Stage 2 entails but stock fueling is somewhere around 60-65cc. So you're looking at 270ish hp max? The stock turbo will barely he able to make enough air (air! Not boost) to produce that power. You also have a tiny tiny turbine housing. So going to an HX35 will give you more top end due to more air and a huge increase in your ability to flow air OUT of the engine. The tradeoff will be later spool. Compared to the stock turbo it will be significant, but not necessarily undriveable. It all depends on what you want from the car. EGTs should not increase. If you push the stock turbo beyond its limits the heated air will of course result in higher EGTs

Currently debating the cost vs fun if i have the ip built up. I am very familar with custom turbocharging gasoline engines. Look up boosted jeep on youtube, but diesel is a bit different. From the little i have read so far for the om606 i need 3 parts. Bigger ip elements, bigger turbo and modified tune. I have a spare engine and manifold so fabbing is the easy part. Question is where is the streetable/daily driver fun rolling coal level vs burning up the trans.

you need to buy elements and get pump work done to worry about melting stuff. all the stock crap is pretty safe to use especially if your throwing more air at it. the hx wont make you run hot, likely you'll run cooler cause its bigger than the mercedes turbo on he exhaust side, i doubt youll get it to fully spool tho aka you probably wont have enough fuel to use it.
