Anyone fitted a Transgo 722.6 upgrade kit?
Hi all,
I have been looking into gearbox options for my car, I have seen there there is a basic upgrade kit for the 722.6 gearbox which seems to be a few upgrades to the valve body within the transmission. The kit seems to be an upgraded set of springs and seals etc which help increase the clamping pressure of the clutch packs which then in turn allows for a reduction in flaring. Just wondering if anyone has fitted this sort of kit at all, as the transmission is used for other makes under the model name 'NAG1' there are a few upgrade options. I believe the AMG version of the box simply has slightly faster valve solenoids and slightly different clutch packs. The upgraded kit which increases the clamping force should give the whole system an upgrade without needing to remove the transmission.

Back in the day Transgo ( By Gill Younger ) was the kit to use, but then electronic shift / more complicated units came along and things got slim. I have no idea who is behind the Transgo name these days. Sonax is now one of the big players.
There is an "AMG" solenoid that I "think" gives higher line pressure, search the net for AMG 722.6 solenoid. |

I know that the conductor plate and seals do have issues, mine is ok at the moment but will look to perhaps upgrade the valve body when I do a full transmission oil change next. I believe I might be able to do an interim partial oil change using a vacuum oil system as I did with the engine oil, but will do a full transmission filter and oil change over perhaps next year and install the upgraded internals at that point. The car doesn't have enough power at the moment to justify the additional clamping pressure at the moment will I will look to do it when it starts to flare between changes.

I do a lot of work with this transmission. The blue tops do make a significant change and it the best mild upgrade in pressures. It is across the board though and it will effect all the shifts heavy and light load. Most people do not like the downshift coming to a stop but it depends on you.
I would say do not try and do things like a shift kit on these in general. It is very difficult to effect the shifts in a balanced way and more problems can be caused than anything else. I have been testing a valve body that I have developed and it is very aggressive and balanced but it is extremely firm for very high power cars. It has very reasonable downshifts unless you are engine braking and then it is very firm and will kick the car pretty hard. This transmission as in most electronic ones should be tuned for what you want. Problem is it is very hard if not impossible to tune these depending on which egs version you have. Egs52 and 53 are doable but as far as I know the 51 is not. |

I want to revive this thread as I have a 99 E300 with a stage 2 tune from rocketchip and I wanted to do a turbo upgrade and other mods, but I first want to make sure the trans is in the best shape. has anyone seen or heard of using an upgraded valve body? See link below:

I'm going to pull the trigger and do the transgo shift kit, sonnax shift overlap kit, and the amg blue top solenoids on my 99 E300. Now that the weather is warming up again, I'm hoping to do it sometime in the next couple of weeks. From my research, the transgo kit isn't made to improve or increase performance on the 722.6, but to remedy worn parts. Same goes for the Sonnax kits, I'm doing both for preventative maintenance and the AMG Blue Tops for the performance. Why? I want to do the most supporting mods before upgrading the turbo and injection pump.
