NE GTG - Follow Up Thread!!!!

I figured I would be the one to start a new thread just for the fun of it.....

Well - What a great day for traveling. I ran into everything posible from a weather standpoint - Rain, Winds, Snow, Etc.. Left at 5:00AM heading for the CT Coast and arrived 5 1/2 hours later. The SDL was all geeked out with electronics for the trip. Cell Phone, Ham Radio, GPS, Laptop running Street Atlas 2005 (with voice command), and a variety of CD's. AND I FORGOT THE DIGITAL CAMERA!!!!!

The car ran perfect!!!! The most notable fix that I appreciated was the repair of the Cruise Control. Set It and Forget It.

There really is nobody in Update NY to have a GTG with - so it seems I have been accepted as a honorary New Englander.

First to arrive was Doug with his Wagon around 11:00AM and from there approx. 8-9 cars showed up. Watching the group dynamics as we swarmed either as one big group or as little groups from one car to another was fun. Boy did I learn alot from Hattie's car (Psst. Thanks Dad)

After 3 hours I had filled my little brain with enough 'Little Items' information that I look forward to the next couple of jobs. My biggie for the day was my Power Antenna issue. Let me take that back - Knowing that my engine sounds normal was the biggie - not really having anyone around here to compare with. Hattie - Again - Thanks for the tip on the bushing.

Hit the road at 2:00PM and was home by 7:30PM. After 11 hours of driving yesterday - I feel great physically. Slept wonderfully and did not wake up sore. What a SMOOOOTH ride

I did not take notes as to who all was there - If someone want's to add a list to this thread - it would be greatly appreciated.

It was GREAT to associate faces with names and cars.

I look forward to the next one.

Stephen

I too had a great time standing around in a cold parking lot for 4 hours looking at, talking about and listening to the diesels. By the way, I'm nominating Bob's wife and daughter for canonization, as only a couple of saints would tolerate sitting in a parking lot while their spouse/father geeks out over a car.

Special thanks to Bob and Bob for the tips on adjusting the vacuum to the tranny (Bob) and disabling that thing on the front of the turbo (other Bob, what the hell is it anyway). As of this morning the cold 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are like slicing warm butter, and the noise that I thought was a bad bearing on the turbo is GONE! The valve in that thingy must have been leaking. I can't tell you how happy I am that the noise is gone.

I also disconnected the power to the monovalve as an interim fix, ahhhhh heat.

I'll second Stephen's comment on "good to know my engine sounds normal".

Thanks everybody for a GREAT time. I look forward to the next one.

Doug

Sorry Hatty, but I'd say I was very likely the first to get home.

The car barely even got up to operating temp on that drive.

I thought you were heading down to check out that black SDL!

It was fun, I learned a lot about 617's talking to you guys. I liked your wagon btw even though it isn't black she still looks good in cream.

Lots of nice cars and good conversation, to bad it wasn't sunny and 70 out!

But next summer I have a big one in the works...

Hmm my SDL looks sharp in that pic.

Smooth did that belt give you any trouble on the way back? Nice SDL that was a cool nav setup!

I am soooooo envious. Sounds like you guys had a great time. Would have loved to have been there, but from Cincy is a bit far of a drive. Of course if I had made the trip, it would have helped me in my attempt to catch up in the SDL race to 250K! It really is cool to be able to look and listen to similar cars and find out yours is ok after all.
Maybe we can have some GTGs this summer a little east. Maybe throw in some other fun while we are at it. I go up to Mid-Ohio Sports Car track for car races several times in the summer. Maybe Ya'll would like to get together there..and see a race while we are at it!

I had great time too! Nice to finally put some names to faces and check out the cars. Nice to catch up with the old friends too, Bob and Russell. You wouldn't believe how tricked out the nav system was in Smoooth's SDL. Looked like NASA had setup shop in the front seat. Hatties SDL is WAY nicer than he makes it out to be. Hatties buddy (Tony?) had a super clean 98 E300 Turbo on hand to drool over too. All in all it was a great little get together. I hope we do it again in the spring! RT

It was definately a great time. Alot of really nice 617s. I really liked the voice-activated nav system on smooooths SDL. Great to meet new people, definately looking forward to the next one.

Belt made it home fine.... Looking to get that replaced ASAP. Reading the Service Manual pages now. Dragging my feet just a little because I want to get that bushing you showed me.

Yeah the those bushings always seem to die before the shock. Fastlane had the shock for around $30 last time I checked.

Glad to here it, that belt isn't to healthy.

thanks to all

don't know about you guys but after reflection the 3 hours we spent there was worth 1000 hrs of speculation.

i'm giving a thumbs up to more gtg's for great learning experiences.

btw rwt - i checked my cruise control, it seems all the guts are there and maybe the stalk was broken off by the previous owner ..

cruise control working

changed out the old broken switch which upon inspection was still in there with the stalk part broken off. it had been in there like that since i have owned the car .. 10 yrs!!

r+r with the new used switch (thanks rwt!! ) took about 20 minutes., without removing the steering wheel.

then the crucial test .. took a couple of tries, i suppose since all the electronics had not been used in oh about 15 years i'm guessing, and then it caught and is working fine

thanks again for your generosity rwt.

now for a long highway run
