Arrow Houston, TX Area Winter 2008 GTG, February 9, 2008

It's been a while since we've done something locally. So, here goes. The Winter 2008 Houston area MB GTG will be held on February 9, 2008. I've decided to do something a little different this time around. We'll meet at the Cracker Barrel at 18151 Katy Fwy for breakfast at 8:30am. Attending the breakfast is optional. If you do not wish to attend the breakfast, just meet up at the Cracker Barrel parking lot by 9:45am. We will depart at 10am and go to the Sterling McCall Old Car Museum in Round Top, TX. Traffic and weather permitting, we expect to arrive in Round Top around 11:30am. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults, $3 for kids. If we can get more than 10 people to come in our group, we can get a discounted admission rate. After that, we'll head back home (or to other destinations) at our own pace. Since it's about the same distance from Austin to the museum as it is from Houston, we're inviting fellow MB owners from Austin to come down and join us for some vintage autos and fun. Bring the family along and make this a nice outing. Make sure your MBs are up for the "journey". Get that oil changed, those belts adjusted, those tires rotated, fill that fuel tank up, bring the camera and come along!

Addresses:

Departure Point:
Cracker Barrel
18151 Katy Fwy.
Houston, TX 77094-1208

The Cracker Barrel is located on the eastbound side of the freeway. If you're coming from the east, take the Greenhouse exit, make the u-turn and it's right before Barker Cypress. If you're coming from the west, just take the Barker Cypress exit. Of course, if you want detailed directions from your house, Mapquest will be able to provide that. Due to the ongoing construction along the Katy Freeway, keep an eye out for lane closures. Periodically monitor this site: http://www.katyfreeway.org/closures.html, so that you may take an alternate route to the departure point should a lane closure occur on the freeway that weekend.

Destination:
Sterling McCall Old Car Museum
4214 S. State Highway 237
Round Top, TX 78954-5173
Museum Website: http://www.oldcarcountry.com

RSVP in this thread. I've posted this to some other MB forums too. So if you're also a member at one of the other forums and come across one of the threads for this GTG, keep in mind you just need to RSVP at ONE forum, not all of them.

I need to make this one...I will pencil it in. Millie needs a trip - she has only been run about 100 miles since the meet up in Winnsboro/Vernon.

Besides, I need an excuse to change the oil (hope 240Joe isn't watching ).

The Lone Star section of MBCA is coming down from Austin. They made some reservations at a nearby restaurant for lunch after the tour for anyone who wants to get a bite. They've made reservations for 20 people, which they can change up to 24hrs before the GTG. So also let me know if you want to attend lunch afterward so I can tell them to increase the number of attendees or not.

Restaurant Info:

Klump's Restaurant
101 S. Washington
Round Top, TX 78954

Dont make this mistake

I was just on mapquest and made an error on the towns search, the town is Round Top not Round Rock .The two towns might get confused by future viewers of this thread ,not by h -towns spelling but by the fact that they both sound alot a like .East of Austin.

They'll understand it's Round Top when they follow the caravan onto 290 instead of continuing north on I-35.

Chicken Ranch

Tell 'em it's near the Chicken Ranch in La Grange. If they don't know about that revered Texas institution, they're missing a colorful bit of Texas hotsheet history. A number of prominent Texans were found to be regular customers of the well-known brothel. Politicians and business leaders from all over the state were exposed to public embarrasment by Houston's own Marvin Zindler, who's tenure with Eyewitness News in Houston was insured by the national attention he brought to the story.

Having imparted that bit of early morning trivia, back to the point -- John & I will try to join you guys, assuming we can get one of our too-many cars in a condition we feel safe getting farther than a tow from home! We're working on that, but it's been far more interesting than we ever expected.

Hope to see you guys in a month!

Sunny

Hey! How're you doing? I thought of you when I saw the thread on the guys putting together the Silver Star Rally Mercedes Road Rally Across the Midwest: Thinking of organizing may-june. $1000 prize. They're gonna need you, even if they don't know it yet. You really made our GTG special -- thank you!

Don't be too much in reverence -- I've been making some really dumb mistakes. WARNING! Ugly stories of foolishness and folly At least for a while, I cannot say, "I'm not THAT blonde...", 'cause it appears I may be, after all! But John still loves me, wants to keep me, and still wants more Mercedes Benzes, so my screw-ups are recoverable. I think.

I lived in Houston for a couple of years back in the late '70s, and remember Marvin well. I was sorry when I heard he'd passed. His style was a little over-the-top for my taste, but you're right -- he did a lot of good for a lot of people.

We'll look forward to seeing you at the museum -- we might drive down to Austin Friday and make the run with those folks Saturday morning. At least that way, we'll be assured of someone noticing if we die by the side of the road!

May the diesel gods smile on us and let us finish three cars by then. Surely, it's not too much to ask. I'd even settle for two if I had to, but I'd want them sooner....
