Either date should be fine. I can put something together for the peninsula. I know many of the mountain roads well, as well as some good eats in Half Moon Bay. Its usually foggy in the summer, which can be pretty nice through the trees.

Let's go!

At the moment I am open on both dates. How about we plan for the 19th with the 26th as a backup just in case?

There will be many opportunities for drives starting at a mid-peninsula bayside location (e.g., R.A.B. Motors). We could travel the ridge (Hwy 35) or the coast (Hwy 1). If the coast, we need to make sure that Devil's Slide hasn't closed the road at a critical location.

If we drove from San Mateo over to the coast and then up to The City, we could get lunch along the way (1/2 Moon Bay?) and do part of the "49 Mile Drive" in SF before splitting up to go home.

Nik, the tool bucket looks great in my '87, thanks for bringing it.

RAB Mercedes-Benz in San Rafael will probably co-operate.

Zack has suggested that we have a Peninsula area meet for mid to late July.

Jeremy added that we meet at R.A.B. Motors in San Rafael. [map]

Which weekend works best July 19th or 26th? Please respond with your preferred date.
The Marin County Mercedes Benz dealer, RAB Motors, in San Rafael, has been co-operating with the Mercedes Benz Club of America (the MBCA) for many years in hosting events for owner/enthusiasts.

Typical among these are the monthly "Tire Kicker" events, when Mercedes owners from all over the Bay Area, once a month at 9am at a weekend, converge on the parking lot of Borders Books, right next door to the dealer.

http://www.mbca.org/sfba/pdf/February%2008.pdf

Some of the Dealer's techs bring their Mercedes cars to participate also.
After an hour, or so, the group goes into the Borders Books cafe and grabs a couple of tables for more discussion.

The Dealer has in the past, (and evidently continues to do so,) hosted events for MBCA members, such as Tech Sessions, Drives, and open house at the dealer whre good refreshments are served also.

The contact person would likely be the Service Department SA supervisor,
whose name is David Santy, and who is a good guy and likes to go to all the events.

This dealer is ideally located, just off the 101 Freeway in San Rafael (easy to see from the freeway) and just over the Richmond Bridge and close to the Golden Gate, making access incredibly easy from anywhere in the East Bay, San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin Sonoma and Mendocino and Lake Counties.

However, I haven't been back to RAB for any work on the car since 2004, when I had a lot done there to it, because at the end of that year I moved out of San Francisco.

Thumbs down Devil's Slide? Nein Danke....

No it wouldn't.

It's incredibly dangerous, and usually has those orange pyramidal cones there marking the latest part of it that fell into the sea, and the actual "Devil's Slide" part of it is only about a half a mile long and is a white knuckler "par excellence".

The only reason to go there is because you have to, there are no other alternatives to it, to get past there on Highway one, are available.

I absolutely hate it.

Cars go off the cliff there lots of times. Just happens.

Note to everyone: This post needs to be "bumped" once in awhile.

murdoc and everyone else:

Friendly reminder:

It can't be made a "Sticky" where EVERYONE WILL SEE IT, until a FIRM date for the drive has been set.

It needs to be "bumped" a lot, because the Diesel discussion is amazingly busy, and this will get buried fast in a deluge of other Diesel Discussion posts.

Maybe even in a day.

The Moderators of Diesel discussion understandably view with distaste, threads that go back and forth about TALKING about dates before selecting one for an event.

Therefore, let us select a DATE for this ASAP.

Then the Mods will "sticky" this one right away ( I would think) for us.

We can then figure out the itinerary, route, and other plans.

Any date works for me. Several people on Saturday have said they want to do it again. We already have our two participants from Los Angeles willing to come.

We are on the way already.

Places on the coast to meet, below SF (Seaside Restaurants)

Moss Beach, Montara, and Half Moon Bay, as I recall had good ocean view restaurants with HUGE parking lots, right by the side of the road on Highway 1 below San Francisco.

This is just a suggestion I am throwing out, but it's worth a look.....

Nick's on Rockaway Beach in Pacifica, the Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society,
and the Moss Beach Distillery come to mind. There are others, but I can't remember the names just now.

For example:

Here's the Yelp site review on the Moss Beach Distillery

Moss Beach is amazing, but I highly doubt 15, let alone 30 cars are going to fit. Its on some tight streets and is generally quite crowded. I am proposing a meetup in Woodside (I'll find a good spot), a nice drive over highway 84, then up 1 north to Half Moon Bay, burritos at Tres Amigos, then continue the drive back over 92 to San Mateo or whatever, or maybe better yet, Newark Pick and Pull. Yes?

OK, Zack. Sounds pretty good to me. You are the expert.

this means you don't like the idea of meeting at RAB first, right??

Listen to this: The girl who was supposed to come with me to this last one, we just had, in Santa Rosa, accepted, but right before it happened, said that she couldn't; she bailed.
She had came up here from Woodside, several months ago. Maybe she'd like to go back, but this time as my guest. I could ask......she said it was very pretty down there. A long time ago, I lived in Redwood City for a few years, and went there once or twice......

I'm not totally opposed to San Rafael, but we've had 2 of the last 4 up in the North Bay. I'm not saying I won't do it, but it would be a nice change of scenery. But its not my decision, its the groups.
