I still think you need to bring the 6.9. If you don't we may not have any M-100 representation at the get together.

going to miss this one

The family and I are heading down to Houston Friday for the wife's 20th high school reunion. So we will be passing through Centerville a day early - and not in the 300SD, but the MDX.

My 300SD finally got a new vacuum pump last weekend (and now will shut off with the key!) after being out of commission for over a month (no time to diagnose - been busy with the 1 year old!).

I'll be doing a little more deferred maintenance before I start driving the SD regularly again - transmission service and valve adjustment are next on the list.

Hope you guys have fun. I'm looking forward to the pictures!

Well the '83 is now running.

1) My diagnosis - There appears to be both an air leak and a fuel restiction on the system. The fuel pump is old and appears to be leaking air let's replace it.

2) Mechanic 1 replaces fuel pump after I couldn't reach the bottom nuts. Car won't start.

3) Mechanic 1 diagnosis - no fuel reaching the injectors, it has to be the IP. Me - Are you sure? These things don't normally just completely fail without some sort of secondary warning or effects that I know of. Mechanic - we're sure. But let me call an old MB hand.

4) Mechanic 2 - It's the IP. Mechanic 1 - Are you sure? The customer is in doubt. Mechanic2 starts cussing and throwing wrenches - How dare you doubt me! I've been working on these things for blah blah blah.

5) Go talk to injection specialist about possible repair. This guy has forgotten more than I'll ever know about injection system! Has all of the very high priced test and adjustment equipment in his lab. He mentions that there is no way he could even look at it for another week. But he immediately described the entire pump system and took quite a while chatting about it and giving me hints on how to test it. His unseen diagnosis? "You probably have either an air leak or fuel blockage".

6) Back to mechanic number 1 (the car has been sitting for over a week by now not running) and asked if I could try a couple of tests myself. Got a fuel tank with clean disel fuel, ran a new line from the tank to the fuel pump, then from the fuel pump directly in to the IP. After a few misteps (mechanic had left the injector lines loose, the fuel line kept floating to the top of the tank, etc.) car fires up and runs. I tell the mechanic to change out all rubber lines, drain the tank and clean the strainer, and verify that all metal lines are clear.

7) Car now runs like a red-*ssed ape. Well, as far as I can tell from a brief run around the block. Now we are rushing to get the system retrofit back to R-12 in time to run up to Houston tomorrow afternoon so I can get the door check hinge rewelded to the frame.

The interior may still be torn apart from various work but it looks like I'll be up there running strong.

There is a guy on the MBCA forum who is going there. Please cross post the question to that forum as he is also interested in going with a group of cars.

Wish I could go this weekend, family coming in from Nacogdoches TX for a GTG. If you run into any problems on I-20 here in the Monroe-West Monroe area, feel free to give me a call. 318-372-3205
