Get a hefty inverter and hook it up to your car, when the power goes out to our sump pump the sdl has been known to idle for days on end.

I'm sorry we had to cancel, but at least this gives me time to hit 450,000 before the gtg!

Awesome idea. I'm heading out to get one.

Looks like I'll be boarding up my house instead. Hurricane watch posted...

I managed to find the last 800 watt inverter left around here (nothing larger anywhere). I guess I'll lower the temp in my fridges and keep them shut since there won't be enough power for them, but at least my sumps should be ok.

I'll get everything into position tomorrow before the heavy stuff arrives.

Did you try harbor freight? They've got some seriously hefty ones, a 5000W IIRC

I'd recommend giving the inverter a trail run - "rated" power is sometimes WAY short of actual power, and start up draw (like say, when a sump pump kicks on) can be significantly more than running draw.

Found out the hard way trying to power tools down at The Vortex

Aaaaack! No GTG!! Hurricane!!! What am I going to do with all this Ozzy?

Chad300tdt 08-26-2011 03:07 PM

Hang on to the Ozzy. We'll try to get a new date set as soon as everything calms down. :)

Also, I went to Harbor Freight and found the last 5000 watt power inverter left. It has 10000 watt peak too so it should be OK for my sump pumps.

Now I have to go get some 10 gauge cable and connectors to go from my car battery to the inverter (which will be in my basement). I'll need 20' to make the connection and allow for a drip loop.

I really hope I don't need to use it, but $500 is far less to pay than dealing with all the damage that a flooded basement could cost.

OK, so what's it doing up there now, Chad?

I just drove home from Dulles airport (9 o'clock outside the beltway from DC) to Gaithersburg (11 o'clock outside the beltway from DC) and all I got was a little moderate rain and a smidgen of wind.

Chad300tdt 08-28-2011 01:21 AM

I'll be on watch here until all the rain is gone. It looks like it could last until 7pm tonight.

I have a major leak in my basement wall but luckily it's close to my sump pit. I have a bucket placed there to catch the stream. I cut a hole in the bottom of the bucket and placed it so it drains into the sump pit. I just need to monitor it since the bucket needs to be moved as the leak intensity goes from a stream to a gusher.

I also have water seeping in where my FIOS wire enter the house and water is entering my service entrance cable I guess at the hood. It's entering inside the sheathing so I imagine the electrician didn't create large enough drip loops.

I hope everyone is safe.

remotemark 08-28-2011 07:22 AM

Here in Charm City, we got buckets of rain and some major winds. My lawn is littered with sycamore branches. Wind is still gusting in at 35-40 mph, but but nothing like between midnight and four am. Power was on and off intermittently starting at about four pm yesterday, but fortunately mostly on so the sump pumps were able to keep up.

I hope your leaks stayed under control, Chad.

Rafi 08-28-2011 07:35 AM

It is a good hing I do not have a basement. I have a crawl space and i still get 1-2 " of water when it rains hard

There are no generators available ANYWHERE now.:(

My battery backups on the sump pumps only last 8 hours.

Next time I visit --- what size do you want me to bring you?? I'm guessing you would prefer diesel, correct?

daw_two 08-28-2011 08:40 AM

Cancelled???

I like to think we just moved it to Friday night! :D

As always, Chad, it was a pleasure to see you. You and your wife are gracious hosts. Thanks for feeding me dinner and the beverages hit the spot, too.

I'll pick up the speed on the renovation work on the diesel generators I have. The 2 cylinder 8KW diesel Lister would be perfect sitting outside your house\shop. Delivery is possible provided you have a way to unload it. It weighs about 800lbs.
