Trip Back across the country!

On December 7th or 8th I'm going to point the 220D east and drive.
First day will take me to Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Second day will take me to Knoxville, Tennessee where I will spend the night with my old friend and former neighbor Laura and her fiance.
Third day will take me all the way to Philadelphia if everything goes right.

I'll be taking I-40 out to Knoxville then I-81 up north. Probably to Harrisburg, PA then I'll take the turnpike the rest of the way to Philly. I DO hate tolls though so I may take US-30 from Chambersburg to Philly, depending upon the weather. It the weather is bad, I'll stick to major highways.

I won't be taking too many photos along this trip since this is a quick 3-day dash to get back east. I'm sure I'll take a few and I'll be posting them either as I go or after the trip is completed.

If any forum members are along this route, I'd love to meet up and check out your Mercedes.

Keep your fingers crossed for good weather!

Phil Forrest

About those fingers being crossed for good weather...

This is probably going to delay my embarcation by a day, maybe even two.

This snow is getting crazy! We still had snow on the ground from the last storm two weeks ago. I'm not amused.

Two storms later...

Well, we're awaiting the second storm in a week.

This one is fascinating. The low pressure center is moving at an amazing rate. Traveling down the west coast ranges, dipping all the way down into southern New Mexico then tracking in a more-or-less straight line aimed at New England, the system is forecast to make it all that way in scarcely over 48 hours. Incredible speed.

Anyway, our high here in Edgewood, New Mexico was in the 30's today. Last night it dipped down below zero. Tonight it will be frigid as well then we'll get slightly warmer temperatures as the new system moves through.

This second system is going to delay my departure until Monday. By then, we should be good to go and I'll hopefully have a thousand miles of painfully cold, dense air feeding the 220D as well as a strong tailwind. From Tucumcari to the Mississippi it's a gradual downhill grade, almost appearing flat but a drop of 6600 feet in 975 miles.

Here's a shot of a bank of freezing fog that is moving over Edgewood right now.

Be safe out on those roads!

This is what everything is covered with after last night's fog bank.

It is amazingly cold outside.

Indeed I did make it back to Philly!
I didn't have much of an opportunity to take photos traveling back east but there are a few I'll have to post when I get the chance.

Now I'm just holed up in Philadelphia, hoping that these polar air masses stop dipping far south and the weather returns to a normal Philly winter cycle, not this high temps in the single digits nonsense. Trudy does NOT like that!
