W113 Hands-on Tech Session

Hello,

The W113 Tech Session is Saturday, August 3rd in Blacklick, OH at Joe Alexander's garage. You do not need to be affiliated with any club or organization to attend, this is an independant event. Joe is an expert Mercedes mechanic, especially on the old roadsters (190SL, 230SL, 250SL, 280SL). He has restored several of these cars. This is a hands on event. All present will be encouraged to participate and share their good and bad experiences. Joe has rounded up all four versions of 113 cylinder heads for inspection, most engine block and crankshaft assemblies, at least one rear axle unit, a couple 113 auto transmissions for inspection, a standard four speed gear box, a later side-shift 5 speed gear box for discussion, several versions of the 113 injection pumps, transistorized and non-transistorized ignition systems, both style power steering pumps, and both styles of electric fuel pumps. In addition, there will be heater control units to inspect, four types of 113 wheels with trimmings, original radios, and more. We will have a tool show and tell, including Joe's favorite tools, some special factory and some homemade. We will perform some basic repairs on a 113 and go wherever time and interest takes us. Timing chain, heater controls, injection, maintenance, tune-up, three position solenoid, auto trans, motor mounts, shocks, valve adjustment, and whatever else can be dealt with. Also, a 108 series rolling chassis is being prepared for dissection. It has an M130 injected engine and transmission like a 113, and most other major mechanical systems and the suspension is the same as the 113. Joe is cutting away portions of the car for viewing and ease of access. For instance, we will be able to quickly remove the cylinder head, or access the front or rear suspensions. Some local 113 owners with nice original cars and restored cars should have them at the session. The facility is basic, not fancy, and the session will be tailored to the do-it-yourselfer. Emphasis will be on common hand tools and basic shop equipment to maintain your cars. A 24-hour copy center is close by for anyone who needs to copy some technical literature brought by attendees or from Joe's technical library.

A. If unfamiliar with the area, get an Ohio map or use http://maps.yahoo.com to find where the East side of Columbus is and how to get there.
B. Use your favorite route to get to the East side of Columbus.
C. When on I-270, travel the appropriate direction to reach the East Broad Street exit (also Route 16 exit).
D. Go East on Broad Street 2 miles to Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road. There is a BP gas station and a traffic light at this intersection.
E. Turn left (North) on Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road and go up the hill and into Blacklick.
F. Cross the railroad tracks and look for North Street. It is only on the left, but the sign is on the right. The Berberich Company is on the corner at North Street.
G. Turn left (West) on North Street. Look for Mulberry Street on your left. It looks like an alley.
H. Turn left (South) on Mulberry Street. The Alexanders are the last house on the right, where the road dead ends.

You can come as early as 9:00am, but we expect people to arrive and depart on their own schedules as this is informal. We will be outside all day, probably to sunset. There will be a port-a-john on site. Please bring any of the following items you deem necessary:
Folding chair
Bug spray
Sun screen
Cooler with food and/or drinks (many stores are near by)
