Advice on 1995 E320
I just found a 1995 E320 that a dealership took in on trade just today, the body has a few major dings and dents, and lots of rock chips, the interior looks decent, only a few minor tears on the b pilor and the wood looks perfect. Both headlights have cracks, and the tires are bald. It only has 126,000 miles on it. I havn't looked under the hood yet or heard it run yet, but so far I am thinking it's a $4000 car. Anything else I should look for if I look for on the car, or should I stay away.

I love W124.032's.
$4,000 might even be high for this car. If the dealer took it on trade-in and given the shape it's in, I'd be surprised if they gave the previous owner more than $2,000. I'd look for an oil leak at the right rear corner of the head gasket (passenger side), and the engine wiring harness. Otherwise, I'd buy the car. These cars are really, really nice.

When I was talking to the salesman tonight, he was thinking they might sell it for $6000 after they prep it and take the dents out, and fix some of the issues. I told him I would buy it as it is, undetailed and full of dirt. I noticed that the headlight assymbly is almost $400 per side, but I can't find just the replacement lenses. The salesman told me that it was traded in on a 2003 ML that was sitting on the lot. I might go back and see if I can get a closer look at it tommorow.

1994 and 1995 W124's have headlights that look like Euro's, but aren't really Euro's.
If the headlight lenses are cracked, instead of buying a new lense, I'd just buy real Euro's.

Do these cars handle well in snow, that would be somewhat of a major factor in the purchase. |

My guess is since it is a rear wheel drive and doesn't have traction control, it probably doesn't drive well in the snow. Probably no different than your W123.

I just went back to the dealer tonight, and told I was mistaken on the vehicles condition, and they want $11,500 for it . I guess the big dents and dings were just an illusion, and weren't there...

I have an 88 300E and the 95 E320. The E320 is peppier and stiffer in corners (What's up with that? Is there a diff in the suspension or do I need shocks on the older car?). I also get a bit better mileage with the E320 if I keep my foot outta the tank. My mechanic says the engine in the E320 is way more complex and thus, more expensive to work on. I've put 15K miles on mine (bought at about 100K) and have done nothing but change all fluids on purchase and then regular oil changes (Dino). No problems of an electrical or mechanical nature to speak of except had to replace a damned window motor! I collected some high speed road debris resulting in broken headlamp glass and I parked to near a curb and busted the spoiler thingy down low in front. $2,300 claim! Kuh-rist, 1/3 cost of the car! I found lenses (Bosch) for sale separate from the whole headlight enclosure and bought them (enclosures are nearly $400!). They're a ***** to install--may not be exactly the right fit or I did something horribly wrong. The reason I linked to Suginami's note is that he provided me with some websites for mod-ing the car that very from very tasteful and practical to "out there". |

The dealership is smoking something if they think the value is anywhere near $11,500.
I suspect the price is not too far from the $6k that I sold my 1993 124.032 (1993 300E 3.2) for.

My E320 had about 100K and was extremely well cared for--all records from orig owner (MB dealer maintained) and 2nd owner.
I paid under $8k, incl TTL. (I don't recall exactly what I paid just for the car but I think it was like, $7.2K). I found online. Here's the description and website. http://www.cars-on-line.com/16587.html I have seen nice ones frequently for sale in Houston on Autotrader (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/index.jsp?advanced=y&certified=&isp=y&search=y&lang=&search_type=used&make=MB&model=&start_year=1981 &end_year=2006&min_price=&max_price=&distance=25&address=70506). I'm betting you could find a much better car within 100 miles than the one offered by the bank. |

Here's a nice 1984 300D, I havn't had the time to look at it, but I know the dealer has gone through and replaced everything that needs to be, I know rickg bought his 300SD from this place. http://www.maharajamotors.com/cars/1984_mercedes_300d.htm
I know this place has good deals on E320's time to time, but I havn't seen any for a while. |
