The US lights feature two round lights. The inner light is the fog light and the outer light is the headlight. The Euro spec lights feature a smooth plastic lense, with rectangular lights behind it.

Ben,

Euro lenses are glass, not plastic. The early models of the euro W123 had two round patterns (fog & head) in the glass as well. The newer W123 (early 80's) have the rectangular patterns for fog- and headlight.

This is just a modification from mercedes throughout the years, it is not a difference between euro and US.

greetingz,

I stand corrected. I should point out that the US edition never received the rectangular lights. It had the circular lamps until production was ceased in 1985.

Thanks for correcting my mistake.

Eric, The difference is that the W123 in Europe had halogen bulbs that were replaced from behind. The same way all modern cars today are. They had a flush lens with the reflector behind it. For the US models, when halogen were not legal yet, they went with 1 large headlight and one fog light. When the headlight went out you replaced the whole headlight, I think they are 7" in diameter. Why halogens were illegal at the time, I have no idea. While Europe had nice bright halogens we had the old incandescent bulbs giving off that wonderful dull yellowish light.

Rick

Thanks. Yes, I wonder why the light laws in US dont allowed the new halogen.
"The new world" with the old car lights... =/

The Saab 900 from the early 80's looks horrible with
their USA-lights, but the BMW-look at the Saab 99 is cool.
