W126 - Long Live the King!
Dear fellow members: All of you know my deep admiration and almost compulsive love affair with the W140 (regardless of the stupid maintenance costs). And, I still consider my S 500 L the best luxury car ever created, period!
BUT: the other day I bumped into a very particular W126 at the dealer's used lot. It was a 1988 420SE, light blue metallic with grey leather interior. It had an electric sunroof, regular (non-auto) A/C and that was about it. No power windows, no power seats, no rear headrests, no original radio, no rear sunscreen, no electric outside mirrors, no ABS, no light alloy wheels, nothing: plain and simple! The unsual thing was that it had ONLY 44,000 certified original miles and was in pristine condition. Never driven myself a V-8 W126 (I have driven more than a dozen L6s) So, I asked for a weenkend test drive. My godness, what a car! The last W126 I drove for a week was a 1989 300SEL (in 1994) that was fully optioned, including the rear individual electric seats. Great car, as I remember. But the V-8 420SE really managed to put a smile on my face. It drove magnificently, a pillowy ride, and had a good punch for the old V-8. Definitely, the W140 improves on ALL fronts over the W126. But when I think how simple and straight forward the mechanics are and how classic it looks, it definitely makes you feel something special inside for the old beast. Long Live the King!

Me thinks its a Euro
With manual everything including A/C controls, I would say that you were driving a Euro Spec car. These have much more poke then the US models. Glad you enjoyed it.

I am fond of just about every MB out there. BUT, to me (and I think others) the classic MB of all time (most recognizeable) is the W126.

Lucky me, my first MB is a w126 -- an '81 300SD. I like it.
Now if I can somehow stuff an intercooler in there, I'm going to like it even more.

Sounds like a pauper in king's clothing. Compare a Euro 500(2nd gen) or 560 instead. I believe ABS was standard on all w126's... if this 420 did not have ABS, thats news for me.
btw.. 420SE is Euro. No need to look at the VIN or manual AC or bumpers to tell. The 420SE was never sold in the US, only the SEL version. |
