Hi! I was wondering, if Mercedes Benz ever decide to revive an older model, which one would you consider to revive? For me, it'd most certainly be the 500SL Gullwing and the W124. For the W124, I'd like Xenon, ESP, PTS, BAS, DTS to be incorporated, and not forgetting the build quality. Would like to hear from you all.

Chung,
I suppose you meant the original 300SL Gullwing?? The one I want to see the most is definitely E500 with current goodies in it: Xenon, Rain-Sensor, Dual Zone A/C, ETS...ect. A V12 powered Gullwing will be cool though... I think it would be interesting to see a revamped 500E (with input from Porsche again...) with a 5-speed automatic (6-speed F1 style optional). Throw in some Xenon's, some cooling updates, 17"-18" wheel/tires, and an updated DOHC 5.0 V8. (variable valve timing on intake/exhaust cams, variable intake, etc) Who knows, perhaps even a supercharger...
Of course...a Pullman limo, gullwings of several flavors, and perhaps even a modernized 6.3... Just my pair of cents...Lee |

#1 would be an updated w124, 400 or 500. But, since Daimler Chrysler seems to be on a retro kick with their Prowler and other 50's look alikes, how about a nice 1953 300S coupe, as in the last Star magazine article on the Fashion Island show, but with modern safety/mechanicals?

I think the W124/500E, E500 would be on the top of the list, the GullWing as well, and what the heck, add the 300SEL.6.3, 450SEL 6.9. These would all be Limited ( you have money burning a hole in your pocket) Editions of course.
Although a lot of pride over at AMG would get hurt if Porsche where to chip again with the W124. Why not have a W208, W210 chassis project with some of these companies chipping in; McLaren, Cosworth, KKK, and of course AMG-West! Then bring the cars in under $95K. The US would still have a waiting list over 2yrs for these cars I'm sure. But lets face it, some of the people who visit here can out-right buy what ever they please, and one day I will be there too, soon I hope. These same indivduals would be more than happy to have such a vehicle, and not merely to keep up with a BMW or what ever, but to simply and with no discussion, blow the doors of any thing else! We all know MB is at the top of the food chain, they just need a "wake up call" example to the market. Why not a 500E? ------------------ Ross 96 C280, Greenish Black |

Hahaha... great ideas! Sometimes when I walk around my car, I'd just wished I had magic fingers, or had the powers of the genie... one touch and the car's brought up to the level I want it to be It'd be cool huh? But plain fantasies!

I'd love to see a 300SL roadster/gullwing re-done...with an M119 V-8 punched to 6.0+ litres!
BTW, Yal: why would you want a 500E with the CL's motor...it has less power amigo ! Hehe. ------------------ Best regards, Michael '92 500E '88 300TE |

I never said anything about the updated 500E having a 3-valve motor...just an updated 5 liter one. I'm sure MB has learned SOMETHING in the years since the M119's inception. Keep the displacement at 5.0 liters or put something else in there (ala new C-class naming strategy) and have it pushing 500HP.... If 5.0 displacement is kept a supercharger (500E Kompressor) and/or variable valve timing (with greater range) on both intake and exhaust cams, (if not supercharged) variable intake, and overall lighter construction. Of course, the old engine was amazing as-is. The primary improvement would come from a 5-speed auto or 6 speed F1 tranny which would let that godzilla motor stay right in its meanest rev-range all the time.
Lee PS Of course, we could get some of the other factory hot rods pedigree in on the same chassis/model...have a 6.3 liter version as well as a 6.9 liter version of similar architecture to the above. |

Michael, What ever was I thinking
But actually I was just looking for something a little more modern in the technology area you know 3valves per cylinder, etc. I wish the engineers would read this forum so they don't screw up the next EClass. |
