Last week I saw a triple black 107 SL with chrome trim pieces replaced with black ones and AMG badges. On the rear I noticed a 600SL badge. The car also had aftermarket wheels painted black. Is it possible that this car was equipped with a 6.3 or the 6.9 engine? The car did not have the 30MPH bumpers or round lights so it was a euro model. Any thoughts?

Betcha good amount that is another case of "over-badging" a car. Granted, sticking an M100 in one of those would be neat to see, I doubt you'd really want to do it unless you had WAY too much cash and wanted a unique toy.

You mean, like sticking a V-12 in a 500E? Is there a Mercedes junkyard in Sothern California?

Jim,
Sort of...though I wouldn't put a M120 V12 in a 500E for a couple reasons. The engine bay is tight enough as-is. Cooling is a big enough PITA as-is. That longer motor wouldn't do you any favors there. You would be better off going with the 6.0 or 6.5 conversion and putting a big ole twin-screw (Kleeman!?) supercharger in the deep V of the M119 engine. Of course, you would also have to do some custom injectors for the NOS...

Me, demented?...never!

My 500 SEL has a 560 SEL badge on the boot ( say trunk ! ) when I got it. The people that know tell me the locals like to have the top of the range and rebadging is quite common over there. It was easy enough to steam it off and stick a new " 500SEL " on in it's place. The new badge only cost about $15 so at that price, I could display the whole 126 range on the rear of the car in a matter of days, all at very little cost
