Hi all! The C-Klasse was launched in Malaysia a few weeks back. Only 3 engines and one trim are available; the C200K, C240 and C320. The only trim is Avantgarde. I'd expected the Elegance trim. Well, standard options include glass sun roof, elec. seats/steering wheel, leather, choice of black maple wood or aluminium, xenons, PTS. One thing which disappoints me are the sky high prices.
C200K Avantgarde = USD$92,120 C240 Avantgarde = USD$102,648 C320 Avantgarde = USD$128,968!!! It's too expensive! The E320 Avantgarde is only selling for USD$118,400 while the E320 Elegance is going for USD$108,439. Prices for the S320L w/ Command has dropped from USD$289,520 to USD$234,284. The S-Klasse is only available in 3 engines, namely the S280, S320L and S430L. Sigh, cars here are very, very expensive compared to other markets. Sales of the A160 has been so bad that the price dropped from USD$75,802 to USD$50,008. Only the local Malaysian assembled (complete knocked down) C-Klasse swould be slightly cheaper; around 10%-15% and only available with the C200K and C240. ------------------ Regards, Chung ======================== 2000 E240 Avantgarde 1995 E220 1989 280SE 1979 200 1970 280S ======================== ICQ UIN #93691356 |

Hi! Unfortunately yes. The price we pay for an S320L could easily get someone an S500L or even an S600 in the States, or anywhere else in the world. Every foreign car imported into the country faces a 200% or more import duty of the car's cost price. And that doesn't include road tax,and ENGINE tax.
Regards, Chung P/s Wanna know how much an S55AMG costs here? I was quoted a whopping USD$473,760 excluding road tax. The older generation C200 (locally assembled in Malaysia) costs USD$62,642 and it doesn't even come with elec. seats (it's not even an option). And a W220 S280 with Keyless-Go costs USD$183,714. Wow.....,
This simply stagger's the mind! How much is a Hamburger, $30 USD? With taxes like that, I guess the term "Luxury" is truely realized at those astronomical prices. Paying such a high price can't feel good, especially when you know what everyone else is in the World is paying. ------------------ Ross Newcomb 96 C280, Greenish Black |

I expect that much of the price he quotes is tax. In Singapore there is a permit which in effect triples the price of the car.
In Denmark cars are taxed at 180%. Good luck, ------------------ Larry Bible '01 C Class, Six Speed '84 Euro 240D, manual, 533K miles '88 300E 5 Speed '81 300D Daughter's Car Over 800,000 miles in Mercedes automobiles |

Yo Ross, don't worry, a BigMac costs USD$0.95 while a normal Big Breakfast costs USD$2.02. Hehehehehe I hope the AFTZ (Asian Free Trade Zone) will come into affect; probably in 2004 and all cars will be tax free WWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

Weeee is right,
With that sort of tax cut, your going to have to add some Real Estate for a new larger garage! It will be like a two for one SALE! Any plans or is it not for certain? ------------------ Ross Newcomb 96 C280, Greenish Black [This message has been edited by roas (edited 10-29-2000).] |

Yo Ross. The Asian Free Trade Zone will come into affect. It's definite. But one thing remains unanswered. Import duty and tax is one the government's main source of income; easiest way of obtaining money, and they simply won't let that go. So I suspect the government wouldn't make importing cars REALLY tax free, simply a lot lower... or they could easily increase the price of petrol. But hopefully after the tax is reduced, I get to see AMG's running around. Hahahahahhaa! Or even S600's! They're only 3 S600's where I live, and two are reconditioned cars and cost much cheaper. BTW, here's a list of the Mercedes cars offered by the local Mercedes dealer and their respective prices.
2000 C-Klasse (Local assembled in Malaysia) All prices quoted in USD$ C200 Classic = $55,362 C200 Elegance = $62,642 C230 Elegance = $68,421 C230 Kompressor Elegance = $71,245 2001 C-KLasse (Imported from South Africa) C200K Avantgarde = $92,120 C240 Avantgarde = $102,648 C320 Avantgarde = $128,968 2000 E-Klasse (Local Assembled in Malaysia) E200 Elegance = $86,393 E240 Elegance = $103,322 E280 Elegance = $$111,581 2000 E-Klasse CDi (CBU Imported from Germany) E270 CDi Avantgarde = $96,860 E320 CDi Avantgarde = $104,378 E320 CDi Avantgarde Estate = $109,642 A-Klasse (Imported) A160 Elegance = $50,008 SLK (Imported) SLK230 Kompressor = $103,853 (Imported) CLK (Imported) CLK230K Cabrio = $128,695 CLK230K Coupe = $111,589 CLK320K Cabrio = $174,313 CLK320K Coupe = $157,734 SL (Imported) SL320 = $237,471 ML (Imported) ML320 (5 seats) = $121,667 ML320 (7 seats) = $122,982 S-Klasse [(Imported) Local assembly beginning next year] S280 with Keyless-Go = $182,103 S320L without Keyless-Go = $227,208 S320L with Keyless-Go = $235,103 *All prices quoted in American Dollars. All other models like the S430L, S500L are all intend order. With prices sky high for entry level cars, cars like SL500/600's, E320/430/50/55's, are rare sightings. Most Mercedes with bigger capacities are mostly reconditioned second hand models. ARGH! |
