What should I look for with a 1992 400E?
The local MB dealer just got a 1992 400E on trade-in and it has 112,000 miles. They are asking $8990 for it, but according to KBB that's over $3000 too much. I'm thinking about taking it for a test drive. Are there any specific problems this model is known for? I would imagine that if it was well-maintained it still has quite a bit of life left considering it is a V8. No head gasket issues, right?

There are plenty of threads covering the pros and cons of this model. Do a search and discover them...
Some of the issues include: -The M119 (V8) engine was fitted to tight on the W124 chassis, hence the engine suffers from overheating. -Related to overheating, all rubber hoses and seals degrade prematurely. -The car was manufactured in Mexico and not in Germany. This presents a constant debate between owners and techs about build quality and reliability. - The A/C evaporator could be an issue on this models as it was on W140s. Check that the A/C blows constant cold air. - If transmission hesitates or shifts abruptly, be suspicious of serious and expensive repairs coming soon.

Also, related to the engine compartment heat issue is the life of the wiring harness. I'd want to know that it had already been replaced if I were buying one of these.

Mercedes could not fit the production of the 400 E into their plants in Euro. Since the model was especifically focused for the North American market, the only exit they came up with was to manufacture the model in Mexico. The car was shipped in parts along with the M119 engine and everything was put together a la mexicana. Do a search on 400E / E400 and you will see, there are a lot of comments about this isue.

You could probably use it to float across to Florida.

According to my VIN, our 400E was made in Germany at the Sindelfingen plant. Sounds like another conspiracy to me.

I recently drove a 207 c class from the dealer. The window sticker showed it was assembled in Brazil, from all-German components. When I turned on the radio, The Girl From Ipanema came on. The car began to samba across the highway. But seriously, I had no idea that back in the early to mid-90s Benz was assemblying cars in Mexico. Peter, you may be able to get a copy of the car's original window sticker from Benz-USA. That may show the assembly point.

I was always under the impression that the VIN was good as gold concerning where the car is manufactured. I would put serious money on our 400E being built in Germany.

That is what I always thought. A. Rosich, however, thinks otherwise.
