1991 420sel Idle Problem
This is a 1991 420sel with 210,000 on it...most everything is still original on it...even the transmission. I have only had the timing chain break on me at 125,000 miles...does not burn any oil...and still runs and drives well.
It was having an issue where it idles at 1100-1500 rpm in park/neutral...and 900 in gear all the time. . I replaced the idle control valve with a used part (since the dealer wants $700 for a new one) only to find that it...now on occasion..will idle at 900-ish rpm then 600-700 in gear. Seems like...when it feels like doing so it will idle normally. Is there a way to test the idle control valve to see if the spring is broken? I sprayed it out with carb cleaner thinking it was carbon buildup...i shake it...you can hear something rattling in there. I dont know if it is supposed to do that. There is no problem with the way it runs. It runs as it always has...beautiful...but it is frustrating shifting from drive to reverse because it feels like the rear end will fall into the street when it slamms into gear. Help!!!
