As I was at the dealer yesterday checking out what is new in their showroom, the sales guy told me I should trade my SL in for the CLK Cabriolet. He said the CLK is a harder allocated car than the SL, and he sold more SL than the CLK being the waiting for the Cabriolet is still a year and a half for a new one. The one I was looking at is a '00 Cabriolet and the asking price is $70K. It has 13K on the clock with upgraded Bose sound system. I always think the SL is the classiest car MB puts out (OK, besides the CL600), and being the the last year body style I would think the current SL will be classic soon. And is it not the CLK is considered mass production car like the SLK? Any opinion, guys?

Hi Eddie! Are you sure that it's not the prospect of a "newer" car that has you intreaged? SL vs. CLK ? It's all a matter of perspective and perception. I too think the CLK is one gorgeous car, but I am extremly pleased with my SL.

Dale,
That is exactly my point. I love my SL and have a hard time to part with it. I think the CLK is a beautiful car, but I also think it falls under the fab car category. The current SL has been in production for eleven or twelve years, I just don't think the CLK will remain the same body style for this long. But the temptation of the CLK is soooo great, especially after seeing JCO's pictures. 95 R129 98 W163 |

elau,
I think you'll find the CLK a very different car. Sure it is a fabulous car, but it is not a two seat ultra well built sports car. It is a soft, 4 seater mass produced car based on the W202 chassis. My own view is that the present R129 SL is one of the finest designs ever; it is a real shame MB has moved away from the purity of line (ad engineering) it exemplifies. Why not put in an order for the new SL and start saving?

IMHO... I didn't think much of the coupe-version CLK when it first came out, but when they introduced the Cabriolet...ooh-la-la! I sold my 97 SL to get the CLK Cab, because I felt there were too many SLs on the street. Even to this day, I still see more SLs than the CLK "Cabs". If you include the hard-top versions then it's a complete different story, but I think the ragtop version of CLK Cab should be in a class of its own. I'm saving up now to get the new SL when it arrives, but I'm still going to keep my CLK Cab around for awhile. If they change the body style on the CLKs, all the better!

The CLK convertible is great! I have been looking at 3 new ones on a truck today (and normal 5 CLK's) and I know for sure that the CLK convertible is one of the next targets...but only besides the R129 SL, not instead of!
The W124 300CE-24 cost as much as a 300SL-24 back in 1993 in the Netherlands, but isn't worth half as much anymore...I think that the CLK convertible will go the same way as the W124 CE convertible. greetingz,

I just wanted to add that I think the CLK Cabrio is one helluva car. I just rented one for a week in Germany, and was extremely impressed with its build quality and its composure at speed. All in all a fabulous, well-designed car.
I had never really considered a CLK for my fleet, but I'm now of a different opinion. Now, if they'd simply offer that wonderful 6-speed transmission!
