Lightbulb Coup de Grâce: Citroen poaches Mercedes sales chief

Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Mercedes-Benz, PSA, Citroen

French automaker PSA/Peugeot-Citroen is serious about breathing new air into its chevron-badged division. After partnering with Polyphony's Gran Turismo racing simulator franchise for the GTbyCitroen concept and announcing the revival of the DS nameplate with an upcoming show car at the Geneva Motor Show, the Franco auto group has managed to poach Mercedes-Benz sales chief Jean-Marc Gales to be Citroen's new chief executive.

Born in Luxembourg, 46-year-old Gales held a variety of positions at Volkswagen, BMW and Opel before moving to Mercedes-Benz. In his new job, he'll be replacing Gilles Michel, who departed Citroen - now celebrating its 90th anniversary - for a government position last December. Gales will join PSA's five-member top executive committee in a couple of months from now.

I hope this helps Citroen. I think they are very fine cars, I would buy one without question if they were sold in the US.

I've owned 4 Peugeots. Rented a Citroen diesel in Europe in '01, loved the car.

I never could see the attraction to those cars. I always thought they were just about the ugliest cars I had ever seen.

Different strokes fer different folks . . . .

I'll admit that the older Peugeots and Citroens were an "acquired taste" in the appearance department. My old 504 Diesels were incredibly comfortable cars with a nice spartan luxury to them, not entirely unlike MBs of similar vintage. Great seats, a suspension with enough travel to absorb anything while still providing decent handling.

The 505 series got the styling to be more conventionally appealing. My 505 Turbo (gas) was comfortable, handled really well, very responsive engine, the best cruise control I've ever had, just a great highway cruiser.

My 405Mi16 I liked least of all, I was outgrowing the desire for a sports sedan, but it was good at what it was made for. A little small inside.

The Citroen diesel I drove in Europe was a fairly generic looking European sedan. Clean lines, if nothing else. Very comfortable, very responsive, got about 40MPG cruising at an average of around 85 MPH. The ex-wife had it up to 106 MPH for a little while. Not a single thing to complain about in about 3000 miles of driving over two weeks, concentrated in 3 very long one-day trips - Paris to near Milan, near Milan to Barcelona, and Barcelona to Paris.

I guess I just like odd things, but I really like Citroens and Peugeots. I missed an opportunity to buy a 504D 10 years ago , passed on a Citroen CX diesel (thankfully- needed an engine rebuild) and wound up with a rusty DS19. I hope I can eventually get the car sorted, but its waaay behind all the daily driver MBs and VWs I have.

The DS was an engineering marvel for its time ....

One day I'll have a real DS. That concept car looks a lot like a Mini Cooper.
