Still want a Sprinter? 100 Mercedes dealers sign on to sell big van
Filed under: Car Buying, Minivan/Van, Work, Mercedes-Benz
Last year, there were 350 dealers selling Sprinters, but the signs in front of those dealerships had the word "Dodge" on them. Now that Sprinters have been pulled from Chrysler's pipeline, Automotive News reports that Mercedes-Benz has established its own U.S. van subsidiary and is canvassing dealers to sell the hardy haulers. Of the 165 Mercedes and Freightliner dealers invited to add Sprinters to their lineups, 143 have accepted the call. Even though 14,600 Sprinters were moved through Dodge outlets and another 3,682 by Freightliner, Mercedes set the minimum for its dealers at 30 vans annually to begin with. If you're looking for a Sprinter, you'll probably be able to find it with a three-pointed star early next year. In the meantime, dealers are creating the necessary showroom space and adding repair bay features to deal with the big boxes. It will certainly be very interesting to see Sprinters on the lot next to S and E-Classes.....
(Puts flame suit on) I wonder what the average profile of Sprinter driver is and if they are already successful enough to own a Mercedes? Most of the ones that I have met have been very respectful entrepreneurs/craftsman. From what i've seen the grungy 'butt crack worker' generally works out of the back of an old station wagon/ford van.

I do agree with you when I hire a van here in the Netherlands I am more inclined to take a Sprinter over anything that is French or Italian MUCH MUCH more class! And it will definitely last intact until the end of the rental period... However, the Ford Transit has been a cracking alternative over here for years. Although they tend not to be as large as the biggest Sprinters. If you get the chance road test a Sprinter or hire one - they are very car-like and incredibly comfortable compared with my last encounter of an American car - a Chevy Malibu! There is a saying in the UK that the fastest thing on the road is a 17 year old plumber in a van - I bet these days they are all in Sprinters... |

Many owners do enough research to know that they are actually Mercedes so they buy (re)conversion kits for them. Check ebay, there are dozens for sale at any given time.
