I hope this is the proper forum to post this, I know basically nothing about Mercedes but it seems like the proper place - if it isn't please tell me. I'm considering purchasing an '84 300d 4 door sedan with the 3.0L 5 cyl diesel and an auto for my wife for affordable and safe transportation. It has 235,000 miles on it and is supposed to be in good condition, they are asking $2400 for it. The auto tranny was rebuilt last year and everything is supposed to be working in the car. I currently own and drive a Dodge Cummins turbo diesel and have done all my own wrenching on my vehicles for a long time - nothing scares me. I'd like to get opinions on the reliability of a car of that vintage and mileage. Are they all turbo diesels or could this be a non turbo charged engine? What about parts costs and availability? Are parts generall available from salvage yards or is new from the M-B dealer the only option? I've had friends with M-B's in the past (early 80's 3?? and 5?? SEL's - knew them in the late 80's) and was blown away with the build quality of them and the condition of them with 250,000 miles on them at that time. I realize that affordable and M-B is not usually put into the same sentence but based on what I know about diesels and my friends experiences with them I'm thinking this may be an affordable route to go. I appreciate your advice in advance.
