Thanks for sharing that, Scott. Terrific read about an awful tragedy.

And talk about foreshadowing:

[Dave] MacDonald was an unknown to most of those headed to the track, having risen from running Southern California drag strips just four years earlier to helping win the national sports car championship for Carroll Shelby’s Cobra in 1963 by lapping a field of international stars at Riverside. Afterward he had agreed to drive one of Thompson’s radical and ill-handling “pancake” cars in the 500—against the advice of Shelby and others, who felt both MacDonald and the cars needed more seasoning.
