My mileage may be getting a little better. My last tank of mixed driving yielded 17 mpg, and my last highway trip managed 23 mpg, at 70-75 mph.

The only time I've checked it was on turnpike trip between NJ and Ohio. I got 20.7 mpg with my 1990 420 SEL.

I'll post my mileage AFTER I fix my fuel pump. It's leaking like a sieve!

1990 300SE - 237k

I can get anywhere from 17 to 22 mpg. 20mpg is my average though, and what I seem to get on almost every tank. I drive it it like its stolen. I am happy with this. NOTE - My engine has had a valve job, new plugs, Dist, Fuel pump, air filter and tires within the last 5000 miles. And I maintain it meticulously, as they say in the classifieds. mike

My clk trip computer reads 1200 miles at 24 mph and 18.1 mpg.

My last all highway trip was for 180 miles and 24.2 mpg, which I thought was pretty good considering the average speed.

My 92 500E w/110,000m--with mixed driving, the best I have gotten is 16 mpg. Lately its been 14 mpg.
My 92 300E w/165,000m, usually averaged 20-21mpg.

This is with CA crap-gas, 10% whatever, (not gas).

Fad, how do you get over 20 mpg in your E500?

14 mpg around Canberra - I admit to giving it the boot, but only because it needs it to get going off the line. No long trips yet.

I just averaged 19.5 mpg with the last tank on the 300TE. I didn't top off the tank, so I know it maybe could have taken another 1/2 to 1 gallon, but I've been wondering about something: is there a compelling reason to top off or not to top off my car? I remember reading certain car manufactures don't want you to top off the tank. Something with the charcoal cannisters on old GM cars?
Just wondering, thanks, Bob

Greetings Tom-

RE: ...over 20mpg in the E500- here is the formula:

>active-on vocal-alert speed warning system
>Valentine-1
>tire pressure spec to MB recc 100mph (+8psi front and rear)
>OE 16x8 wheels + S-03 PP's
>no extraneous junk in the car or in the trunk
>900 coats of Zaino
>smooth operation of vehicle
>timing stop lights vs. jack-rabbit jaunts from red light to red light
>windows up most of the time (a/c used on freeway)

From memory, I think best mpg in the E500 was on 95% freeway trip 70-75mph: 22.4mpg (a/c on 80degree ambient). Worst was 14mpg 100% city w/ jack rabbit spurts.

In contrast, I regularly get minimum 25mpg to max 28.81mpg in my '92 300e 2.6 (daily driver @ 247K)- using the same techniques as above (minus active-on voical alert speed warning system).

Tom- you're 17's and S-03's (added weight) may prevent you from inching out above 20mpg and this may be a trade-off of sorts for the upgraded sizing. I know S-03's are not the lightest tire in the market (probably the heavest Max Perf)- - but they do compliment the E500/500E's weight and package spectacularly.

I just put on my shaved S-03's again after a few months of P6000 Euro-spec. W-speed rated 225/55/16's- - and the ride, handling, & composure of the S-03's are without question= hand's down superior.

best regards
-fad

Heheheh... That's really funny - 900 coats of Zaino.

I've got 6 coats of Z5 on the car right now, and might start with the first coat of Z2 tomorrow...

Hmmmm...do you guys run the 100 mph tire inflation pressures all the time?
I've resisted doing this ... because the rear pressure is over the 35 psi the tires are (probably) rated for.

I would never, under any cirumstances, put more air in your tires than the maximum allowable tire pressure that is printed on the sidewall of your tires.

Remember that the tire pressure printed on the sidewall is NEVER the suggested tire pressure for your specific vehicle. It is simply the maximum amount of pressure that the tire can hold.

The recommended tire pressure for your vehicle is printed in your owners manual, the back of your gas cover, and the B pillar on the drivers side door.

I agree with Sugi - never run tire pressures above those spec'd by the tire itself (plainly its not safe).

I run 100MPH MB recc tire pressures all the time with tires that have higher max cold psi limit than that recc by MB's 100MPH front rear pressures. I also choose to run very high quality/ heavy-duty/ performace tires.

'94 E500: Bridgestone S-03 Pole Position 225/55/WR 16 (shaved)
'92 300E: Michelin MXV4 Plus XSE 205/60VR 15
'94 E320 Coupe: Pirelli P6000 Summer 195/65/VR 15
'88 325is: Dunlop SP8000 205/55/ZR 15

Best regards- - and it's true 900 coats of Zaino- - even on my wheels (front and back sides!)

1975 450 SEL mpg

I'm getting about 14 mpg around town with my 1975 450 SEL .. and not a whole lot better on trips. Despite its poor mpg its a magnifacent car to drive, there nothing like an S Class and it still turns heads even after 28 years!
