380SEL mpg...

17-19 in town, 23 and change on my only highway-only trip at 80mph, w/o cruise, 4people (700lbs of us) and 150lbs of luggage. Also, the rear windows were down the entire way. (A/C doesnt work) That was even with 150miles of it in the ozarks (50-65mph up US 71 past Bella Vista up to new 4-lane going to Joplin).

Absolutely the most fantasmagorically wonderful highway car I have had the pleasure of driving. The buick had better seats though. (see below. the seats in that thing were like 2 of the comfy-est pillows ON TOP OF your most comfy MB seats.)

English Gallons, (4.54 Litres), and European spec

85 500SEC rebuilt top end driven spiritedly, (Up to xxx most days commuting to and in London 22-26 mpg
89 560SEC in need of a tune up but straight through exhaust, lowered suspension and wide tyres on 18 inch rims, (same as above but faster 20-22 mpg).
I just returned from a trip to North Wales that included fast motorway, crawling through towns and villages, blasting past other cars with windows down or aircon on and I got 23 mpg.
I think this is amazing i.e. Very good.
Immagine if it was converted to LPG instead of 72.9-82.9 pence per litre I saw 27.5- 40 pence per litre i.e. the equivalent cost of 50 -60 mpg.
Regards, Chris.

1992 300E, 173k mi.

Best: 26.4
Worst: 19.82

Average: 22.46

And I keep track using my handy Zaurus handheld, with an mpg calc I downloaded. Keeps track of the date, the mileage, mpg, and total number of gallons.

The only other feature I'd like is location and price, so I could see more easily what gas station gives me the best mileage for the price (I'm going to have to remember to email the author about that...).

Actually, now that I have a different commute (more fwy) - I'm getting 20MPG+!!! In fact as of now, my gas gauge is showing 200 miles at just a hair past half tank! I think now that I'm doing more open hwy driving, I must have "cleared out the carbon" from the combustion chambers.

Now that the weather herer in Massachusetts has warmed a little, the 300E is doing better on fuel. My average for the last 3 tanks (about a month of driving) is up to a respectable 22.0 mpg. The cumulative average over my first 4784 miles of ownership is at 19.6 mpg.
The effect of air temperature on fuel economy is considerable. We have had a particularly cold winter and spring. Then again, I have not had to use the AC very much. It will be interesting to see how high the average goes once we get into summer (if we have one --so far, we have had only 2 or 3 sunny days with temps in 70s or more, an incredibly dreary season).

The average for my C43 driven very hard mostly on back roads (70%) and a little highway (30%) over the course of 1 year and about 20,000 miles is 18.4 mpg. Not as good as I would expect given this car's maintenance but acceptable considering my agressive driving habits (40-70 on back roads and 70-140 on highways).

The best mpg is 26.22 (cruise control from NYC to Montreal and the worst is 15.4 mpg (mostly traffic on Long Island, NY).

Yup, the newer engines get much better fuel mileage.
I've been averaging about 17 mpg in local, hilly, stop and go driving. Exactly the mileage I got in my Volvo 940GLE wagon, and the 300TE handles nicer, IMO.
I've gotten as low as 6 mpg in cars, 0.8 mpg(?) in trucks, driving a rented diesel Ryder truck while moving 3 miles across town.
Also recall getting 12 mpg in a 1972 Datsun 510 coupe during a blizzard in upstate NY...but I don't think that took premium gas...
Highway mpg is 20-24, depending on traffic, winds, and speeds.

English Gallons again 4.54 Litres

W220 S430 V8 with 46000 miles

Gives 24.5 mpg at 85 mpg cruise

Averages around 21-3 mpg day to day.

Will nearly hit 30mpg at 65-70 mph

Worst day to day was 17 mpg in town,

and got it down to the mid teens on a very fast run with some flat out cruising touching 150mph at points, still very impressive.

My w123 230ce does about 25 to the gallon average. However gasoline in the UK costs nearly $5 a gallon, so I have a conversion installed to run my Merc on LPG Autogas (similar to propane i think). It does the same to the gallon - there is a switch on the dash to go between gas and petrolium - but the LPG costs about $2.50 per gallon...

I've noticed the same thing. I attribute it to driving closer to redline a lot more, and maybe the impurities in the fuel system being flushed out. I do notice that the effects last for several tankfuls after treatment.
I wonder if the Techron somehow "lubricates" the fuel and continues to do stuff for several tankfuls.
I've been sticking to name brand premium 93 octane (lately lots of Texaco).
I try to find the cheapest major brand station, for hopefully the freshest fuel.
