Opinions on this matter tend to differ a lot. Market specification and model lineup has a lot to do with it.
I'll say, in terms of wordwide production: that the easiest to service and less complicated designed engines deserve this titlle: 2.0 liter, 4-cyl, carburated (200, 200T, E200) 2.3 and 2.2 liter, 4-cyl. fuel-injected (230E/230CE/230TE, E220) 2.8 liter, 6-cyl., carburated (280, 280S) 2.8 liter, 6-cyl., fuel-injected (280E, 280CE, 280TE, 280SE/SEL) I will give a special mention to the 2.5 liter, 6- cyl. carburated (250-W123) Although, the 103 engine (300E/300CE/300TE/300SE/SEL), well maintained, is an excellent partner.

There was a nice thread on this subject several weeks ago with some great responses.
I personally struggle with effectively using the search function, but give it a shot and see if you can find it. I know Gillybenztech posted that his choice was the C230 (non-Kompressor model).

The V-8 W126 cars are generally pretty good, if you can find a well-maintained one.
