Bummer # 1 Cyl full of antifreeze.
My wifes 92 300CE has 76 thousand miles and it has been running great...
We had a couple things to do on Monday.. Had to run to Redding CA. about a hundred miles south of us.. Ran down. Car was running great.. Came back and was running great.. Stopped and picked up so stuff at a friends.. Ran great.. Pulled in the garage and it started missing.. bad.. Raised the hood and saw the antifreeze was a little low.. Not much.. Shut it off and did a couple things and then dropped the lower shield to look for a leak.. Found nothing.. Tryed to start the car.. Starter would not move the engine.. Pulled the sparkplugs.. # 1 Cyl full of antifreeze.. Had run a compression check two weeks before ... All was fine and all the same.. No oil in the Cooling.. I got most of the work done yesterday to pull the head.,.. Just have a few things to do so should have it off today.. Hope its just a head gasket.. Ken |

What a surprise... It was the head gasket.. front passenger side of the #1 Cyl... It had to be a bad gasket when it was installed.. I can think of no way to have damaged it like it is by installing it.. the steel ring that goes around the Cyl is deformed and not round.. So it did not seal well and the pistion pushed it up where it was inside the cyl.. Odd thing is it shows signs of being an old gasket.. Perhaps the original.. Looks like it was just a bad gasket and some one installed it any way..
Pic showes the deformed area.. Ken |
