erratic fuel gauge -- 1993 W124 coupe

Recently noticed an erratic fuel gauge on my 93 300/320 CE coupe. Gauge needle reads "full" when I fill up... while driving it is all over the place, ranging from 1/4 to 1/2 to xx (whatever it is).

It seems to read "correct" when I'm on the throttle; when I roll off, it seems to fluctuate. When stopped at a light, in neutral, it seems to flicker when I press/release the brakes.

Anyone with similar experience? Any suggestions ?? Fuel sending unit has been mentioned in other related thread, but its unclear if its that or electrical gremlins causing variable resistance in the wiring circuit.

Manuel,

two possibilities:
- fuel level sender or it's ground connection somewhere in the trunc,
- fuel gauge ground connection or common ground connection behind the instrument cluster

I cured my chaotic fuel gauge (dancing between 0 an 1/3 without any system) by soldering the connection points on the back side of the gauge and slightly tightening the screw that holds the gauge.

hope that helps,
bis denn,
Christian
