w210 diesel throttle position problems

Hi,

My father has a 96 E300D. Beautiful car, we got a deal on it because it has a check engine light. The light is on because of (according to autozone's scanner) a throttle position sensor or switch.

Car runs great, and if not for the light, Id never think there was an issue. upshifts and downshifts fine, etc.

Can anyone give me information on the replacement of these switches or units in an e-class diesel? Its a long shot from my 83 300D.

Is it a DIY job? is it paticularly expensive?

Thanks,

JMH

I may be wrong, but that switch they're talking about may be a part in the fuel injection pump. NOT sure if it's even a seperately available part, may need a new injection pump. I'd skip Autozone and see a shop familiar with 606 diesels, MAY need to go to the dealership......

Yeah, I just used autozone for their free code reader... Wouldnt buy their parts or use their stuff for repairs.

If it helps, I drove it a lot today, and the check engine light went out. Then, I used the cruise control and on it went again. So it has something to do with a sensor that involves the cruise control (and the throttle position because of that?)

Any info would be great. Thanks,

JMH

Like I said, you'll need to get more specific info on what part thay're talking about. Does "Rack position sensor" ring a bell, or not?
Not sure on the cruise. If the light is out again today, try driving it without the cruise and see if the light comes back. I don't think a cruise-only problem makes sense, unless there is a microswitch in the accelorator pedal, which on a Diesel I don't think there is, i could be wrong on that though.
