Jebus, that's one ugly car. I like the boxier, 90's mercedes... W124 for example. The W129 was nice too, rounded AND attractive, unlike these newer Mercedes.

Just curious.

Perhaps I'm uninformed or (more probably) have poor eyesight, but I can't see much difference in styling between the "new" S class and the current one. Looks pretty evolutionary to me. What are the styling differences?

Thanks,
Richard

Thumbs down the new s class

Has Chris Bangle gone over to Mercs? The ugliness of he BMW 7 made me into a Merc convert: but having seen the new s class- shock, horror, disappointment. where does one go from here. The design looks like a mishmash of all the Merc series.

the s500

It is said that adversity brings people together.I would hate to bring people to my fold for that reason, but my experience might reassure other s500 owners(sufferers) that they are not alone.

My s500, bought brand new was making an ugly clickening sound. I was told that a regenerating valve was bolted to a metal part under the bonnett which was transmitting the sound.( should have been insulated or isilated)

Everytime the engine was started, the dash board would warn that the rt hand reflector lamp was not working ( traffic signal indicator) and the traffic signal audible sounds would click away very rapidly as though a bulb was blown. On checking, NO SUCH THING!! problem traced to the signal unit in the driver's wing mirror. Unit was replaced, ok for three months, same again. Waiting to have the unit holder replaced.
Inspite of having all care lavished on the car, at about 12000 miles on the clock, all four alloy wheels started to bubble and peel. They were replaced.

In the first three months of its life, all the wheel nuts in each wheel rusted and looked terrible on otherwise clean wheels. ( treated them privately)

The brake callipers on the rear wheels are painted dark grey, the four fastening nuts on the disc brake callipers belonging to both the front wheels rusted like mad and looked very embarrasing. Mercs said that they cannot change 400 poud sterling worth of callipers for the sake of 8 rusty nuts!! (apparantly the nuts alone are not changable.

How is that for a tale of woe.
A CAR ENGINEERED LIKE NO OTHER. I AGREE.

It is sad to think that this is what has become of Mercedes-Benz. "The brake callipers on the rear wheels are painted dark grey, the four fastening nuts on the disc brake callipers belonging to both the front wheels rusted like mad and looked very embarrasing" Embarassed by a NEW Mercedes-Benz s500, who would have ever thought there would be that day?? Who know's, maybe it's time for me to start obsessing over another car company. Acura's making some nice car nowaday's that are much more reliable, why NOT?? J/K but seriously Mercedes needs to do something because it hard to argue with facts.

Hard plastic ashtrays, broken visor doors, cheap door handles, leather wears out prematurely, seat support bracket covers break too often, center armrest scuffs too easily, stuffing leaks out of seat seams, wood is too sparsely laden. This last one, I'm NOT sure of,....Spare wheel is made of steel.

Don't know much about the soon-to-be-introduced S class, or the current one for that matter. Just a little C class driver here. It's doing fine in light of what was paid. The spare tire wheel is steel, but the front ash tray cover is real wood ---- though nobody smokes anyway.

But IMO it is sad what we all have to pay to get a certain combination of things on our cars. That combination is true RWD, independent rear suspension, and overhead cam engine. A terrible premium is placed on these things in the crurrent market ---- far more than they cost.

Should I ever become disgusted with MB, the make I would look to where I could get all these things at a lower cost would be Infiniti. Actually, I wanted to buy a G 35 but my wife wanted the C 320 sedan, and guess who won? No, I don't regret the matter for a minute, as the G 35 interior is butt ugly and the exterior isn't styled much better. But it is a quality car, as are its big brothers, if you just close you eyes and think of those $thousands still in your pocket.

Thanks,
Richard

They don't give you a 5th rim now anymore?! Ok that is cost cutting. I would demand one if I were paying $70k+ for a new S.

Smile The new S500

I feel a little better today.
The two pictures shown in these threads, no doubt computer generated,(Rosich and FL116) are really quite depressing. I suspect that like me, every one must have felt that they have been let down by Mercs. Today I have seen a number of other pictures- equally shiney-and I now know that the lights are not going to be pointy at the upper and lower ends but more like those of Maybauch's, that the car looks nothing like a ford focus, that the wheels are going to be 19 inh, although the size is staying unchanged the wheel base will be extended slightly, that an expert on navigation systems has been head hunted from Audi, that Bang Olafson iare contibuting to the dash board design and that the car will be a technological marvel.
I feel that from now my objections should be less robust and my attitude a little supple.

Here's a recent pic, (computer genterated no doubt), from Auto Bild. Is it looking better as we get closer to production?
