Manual Trans. Service/Adjustment Manual???

Is there any service manual available (through MB or otherwise) to cover the manual transmissions and shifter adjustments? I am about to embark on a 5-speed conversion swap into a 190D. I have almost all of the parts to complete the swap, but still need to pull a few details together (new flywheel bolts, throwout bearing, clutch and pressure plate).

The thing that has me scratching my head a little bit is the installation of the shifter assembly and linkage rods. Once the trans. is in place, there won't be much room to work in the trans tunnel (to hook up the rods and shifter linkage), and I don't think they can be installed from above.

I'm looking for any practical advice and/or a service manual detailing the necessary steps for "normal" 5-speed trans installation. Since the 5-speed manual was not exactly uncommon in the W201 chassis cars, I am hoping that the installation will not be of monumental proportions.

Thanks,

SteveM.

Dont know if info about W123 helps any or not but I have the tranny shop manual and they dont even mention 5 spds, there is more info in the Haynes. On the W123s you can put a locking bolt in the shifter linkage (neutral) from below then put the tranny in neutral and get your measurements which dont have to be spot on as you can adjust the threaded ends. Cant you do it when the drive shaft is out?

Thanks for the info.

I have the MB factory manuals (engine and chassis manuals). I will check into the Haynes manual for this model. I haven't started the swap yet, but I like to be prepared.

Yah, the tranny manual covers manual, auto & clutch stuff and not 5 speeds maybe because its a euro item, dono
Maybe its differant with a 190, good luck sounds like a worthwhile project, I really love my 5 speed cars.

Is your shifter a 3-gate or 4-gate pattern? If it's 3-gate, you can use the info from the Haynes manual for the 190e 2.3, 84-88 years.

Basically, just work w/ one shift rod at a time. Unless you have seriously thick forearms (think Popeye), you should have enough space to get them on/off; just don't secure them w/ the clips until you've gotten them adjusted properly. When they're all ready, install the rod into the highest transmission shift arm (furthest from the ground) first, go to the next-highest, then the lowest one.

Good luck, and expect to run into a couple frustrations before the project is complete.

Sorry, I can't help, but when you figure it out I'd like to know. Have a '84 190D and the plastic bushings on the shift rods are gone. Would like to replace them and know how to do so.
