Danger: If your engine overheats on the highway, get to the side of the road and call a tow truck, you can not safely work in traffic.

Danger: Never open the cooling system if it is actively overheated (bubbling, boiling or steaming), you risk scalding burns or toxic steam exposure.

Warning: Removing the pressure cap from your coolant system while the engine is still warm can be dangerous, because a damaged sensor/ gauge or low coolant level can give a false temperature reading. An infrared thermometer is a wise addition to your tools, as it will tell you how hot things are inside the engine, BEFORE you risk scalding burns or toxic steam exposure.

Warning: Adding cold antifreeze or water to an actively overheated engine can crack the cylinder head or engine block.

Even if the engine is completely cold, the system may be holding pressure, just put a rag over the cap so any escaping coolant is directed away from you.

DANGER

I do NOT in any way suggest, endorse or consider this an acceptable procedure.

The material inside is VERY DANGEROUS to your health = external burns, blindness, lung burns, death.

A person I knew in the late 1980's took off his plugged Trap Oxidizer to gut it.

He bought an auto paint quality respirator, gloves, a large pry bar and sealed hazmat safety goggles.

A week later he called, and asked me to reinstall the empty shell of his Trap Oxidizer, because he had second degree burns on 40% of his body from the Oxidizer dust reacting to his sweat.

How Do I Work Safely with Oxidizing Liquids and Solids?
http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/prevention/oxidizing.html

What is a Class C - Oxidizing Materials?
Oxygen is necessary for a fire to occur. Some chemicals can cause other materials to burn by supplying oxygen. Oxidizers do not usually burn themselves but they will either help the fire by providing more oxygen or they may cause materials that normally do not burn to suddenly catch on fire (spontaneous combustion). In some cases, a spark or flame (source of ignition) is not necessary for the material to catch on fire but only the presence of an oxidizer. Oxidizers can also be in the form of gases (oxygen, ozone), liquids (nitric acid, perchloric acid solutions) and solids (potassium permanganate, sodium chlorite). Some oxidizers such as the organic peroxide family are extremely hazardous because they will burn (they are combustible) as well as they have the ability to provide oxygen for the fire. They can have strong reactions which can result in an explosion. The symbol for oxidizing materials is an "o" with flames on top of it inside a circle.

Please

Consider adding these to your tool collection.

I have used Kevlar gloves and sleeves for many years, and they are amazing, here are some example videos.
You may want to turn down the sound, as some are loud.

Cut resistance from HexArmor cut resistant gloves, arm guards - YouTube
Memphis 9378T Cut and Heat Resistant Kevlar Knit Yellow Sleeve - YouTube

Currently I have:
* Thin kevlar gloves for delicate work.
* Thick welding rated kevlar gloves.
* 14" kevlar sleeves for shallow access work.
* 24" kevlar sleeves for deep access work.
* A kevlar welding jacket.
** And plan to replace my leather welding chaps with kevlar welding pants this year.

I used to get burned frequently around the engine / exhaust system.

When welding, I got burned frequently, leather safety gear was little help.

Working inside door panels or around sharp edged body panels always drew blood.

Working with scrapers, razors and other sharp objects was always a hazard, distraction or a slip could lead to serious injury.

No longer, unless I forget to take the time to put on my kevlar.

While Kevlar is resistant to cuts, it still cuts easily on razor sharp edges.

I'd suggest adding instead of Kevlar. These are lighter and breathe better.

I used to be a purchaser and resident safety guru for an aerospace company in Ohio, and used Saraglove products exclusively after seeing a guy trip while carrying a piece of .030" sheet stainless-steel to the shears...the blood loss was horrible and he has limited use of his right hand due to the depth of the cut.

They won't do much for the welding issue, but they are VERY cut resistant.
