Call me a Luddite but I just prefer a paper manual. Any idea where I can get the workshop manual for my 81 300SD? I already have the CD and just do not like it.

Paper Manuals
I'm a Luddite too, I have thousands of vintage Factory Shop Manuals because they're *much* faster to find what you need in...
Anyway, the thing to do is : look on E-Bay and Amazon as there's always books out there for sale ~ once you find the Seller with Mercedes manuals ASK if they have shop worn ones as the ' serious collector ' jerkhoffs don't actually read them and are abhorrent of the old dirty dog earned ones used by actual mechanics, making them hard (near impossible) to sell and so cheaper too . Or, just buy the manual you want on CD Rom and print out the pages you need and use the as ' cheat sheets ' ~ that way you can scribble notes and part #'s on the margins , get them dirty, greasy and so on and just discard when the job is done . Be aware that Mercedes has separate manuals for the engines, various HVAC systems , automatic trannies, electrical system and so on . LOOK CLOSELY before agreeing to buy ! most factory engine shop manuals out there are for NON TURBO models and the chassis manuals are pre - 1983 model year , yes there are differences in the ancillary bits . I finally got some micro fische sheets of parts catalogs (old Dealer Stock) but I've yet to find a reader . Keep beating those bushes as Old Timers are dying off and retiring, I get my best books from folks who buy up estates and abandoned storage units then parcel out everything bit by bit ~ they typically don't think auto books are very valuable so bargains can be had . I hope this helps .

BTW :
Always look in used book stores and Dealers too ~ my Brother and I were 1,500 miles from home in his '81 300SD and stopped into an M-B Daler so I could get something, they had gondolas full of the usual bling-bling crap, gold plated key fobs, $200 lighters and Lo ! a brandy new wrapped in plastic set of the two W-126 Chassis manuals ! I asked ' hey what's with these books here ? ' and the Parts Guy said " oh, we were cleaning up and found the, too old to be any use , they're yours for $87 if you want them..." . SWEET ! .

You can get many of these manuals for free on line via the official Mercedes site: www.startekinfo.com
I don't understand why people want to buy digital versions when you can just download them. Sure some people have a paper fetish...

Paper Manuals
I guess it's because I'm old but I always prefer using paper bound shop manuals .
Easier to find what I need . Downloading manuals is nice but time consuming and takes up twice the space plus they're not bound if you print them out . I always find info I need for a job in several different places in the same book ~ not easy/quick to flip through pages in PDF format .

Yes, the absolute best manuals you will ever find are from alldata.com Don't freak about the $200 a month price though...that's for pros. You can get a 2-year script for a single vehicle for $30, and it covers all kinds of stuff. You get all the OEM manuals...all of them...plus you get all the modernized remade color wiring diagrams and whatnot. You also get access to repair flow charts, real world repair data, component locations, repair and replace info, part #'s, etcetera. I really don't get how no one on this site has used these or talks about them. They will drop $80 for one tiny little really bad quality manual that is just one of the tons you get with alldata, but won't spend $30 for an alldata personal single vehicle subscription. You can download the manuals & diagrams in pdf format also. You print to pdf. Sadly, you lose the interactive nature of the remade diagrams, but they are still AWESOME. And you'll have the whole searchable interactive website for 2 years for $30 or 5 for $50.
