Maintenance schedule for old Benzes?
 

How do you determine and plan a reasonable maintenance schedule for your Benz if you purchased it at 100K+ miles and don't know what was done to it for the previous 40-50K miles?

When I look at some of the signatures here and see how many cars some of you have, I wonder how you keep up with regular maintenance on all of them.

Dont assume anything necessary or correct has been done.
 

The best thing you can do is to 'baseline' your car if you plan on keeping it any length of time. Assume you have had your State's safety inspection so we can eliminate some items. Go through it in this order: Safety: this means brakes, exhaust, steering, tires. Full inspection on brakes, replace all brake fluid bleed system, replace any brake lines that look rusted or wet. Grease and adjust wheel bearings. Full inspection of exhaust so you wont be stuck out in E.Podunk with a hanging muffler. Replace PS fluid. Make sure your tires are not older than 5 years , dry rotted etc if you plan on going on the expressway.
Replace Autotrans fluid and filter, Engine oil and filters, fuel filters. Clean out fuel tank. inspect all hoses clamps etc replace anything that looks dryrotted or wet.
New air filter. Adjust valves if that is the type of engine you have (Diesel for example).
This is just a short list of items. Prioritize Safety first then Sequence your work according to what you can do first. Keep good records and inspect all work carefully if you do it. Inspect all work very very carefully if you pay to have it done. Hope this helps.
