Funny hitman, that actually made me laugh. No offence taken. I do believe the Chevy will total. It is effed up really bad. The Benz was whipped around like a , well, whip and it is fine. We won't be making this mistake again. No word from the insurance company yet. I'll post when we find out. Later

Resonant frequency http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resonant_frequency
How fast did that sneak up on you? I had a Kawasaki LTD1000 that pulled a resonant frequency at about 75 mph and scared the poo out of me.

The Army lost at least 2 CH-47D helicopters because of a resonant frequency tearing a powertrain gear apart. It all started with a minor little speck of a crack in the dampening ring groove. Its dangerous stuff.

We've towed both my Mercedes and my grandparents' Grand Marquis (I was driving it when something in the intake cracked and all the antifreeze was released to the ground) - on our 16' equipment trailer behind an F-250, loaded forward-facing, with no incidents.

In the tow dolly scenario... going back a bit to the original thread when this project was started - what would have been the problem with towing it rear wheels on the ground with the engine idling? It seems that a person without truly adequate equipment who was going to try a project like this in future - and who wanted to learn a valuable lesson very cheaply - might consider this as an alternative. What would have been the "fatal flaw" of this situation?

I personally wouldn't trust a mere steering lock to keep the front wheels straight even on the best good-luck day I could come up with for towing like this. Think of the consequences of the steering lock mechanism (or any other part of the steering, for that matter) letting go, at road speed, and suddenly letting the front wheels steer side-to-side? The mental image of a Mercedes wiping out a lane of traffic on each side before flying off the dolly comes to mind.

by the way... I am a gun nut too.

Does anyone know if Mercedes ever made a Gun rack for the rear window of a 123?

Looks like my grandfathers old Irwin Pederson M1, under that Garand. His isn't as pretty because it was used in combat, the South Pacific's not kind to rifles.

That one is a Quality Hardware and Machine company one and was a "in theater" (I would bet europe as you point out) rifle, its been cleaned up and probably it was rearsenaled in maybe the 60s' I would bet by the mixture of other parts inside (common thing to happen), but it is a fall of 1944 manufacture and was a return so was over there. The Garand is 1943 and also was in European Theater and ended up as a Dutch lend lease return eventually.
