1992 Mercedes Benz 300e 4matic input

Most likely my 1984 300cd will be declared totaled so I have started to look for a replacement. One model that caught my wife’s attention was a 1992 Mercedes Benz 300e 4matic that she found on craigslist.

What should I look for on this particular model? Are there any recalls or major issues I should pay close attention to?

Thanks for you input!!

A 92 300E is a 103 motor, 3.0 liter 2 valves per cylinder, 177 hp/188 ft. lbs of torque, fine motor, but 4-matic reputation from that era is not so good.

So the same year 300CE's had the M103 or M104? I ask because I looked at a '92 CE today and the engine looked like a M104 out of a C280 but carburated.

Thanks guys for all the good info!

At least now I know what to pay extra attention to and ask if they had any problems with.

We really wanted this because of the 4matic.

Thanks again!!!

If you're in the U.S. (socaleuro is a bit ambiguous geographically) 90 to 92 300CEs were early 104 motors, 4 valve per cylinder, 3.0 liter. It is fuel injected (CIS) and still has distributor cap and rotor. The 88 and 89 300CEs were CIS 103 motors, then 93 to 95 were 3.2 liter HFM-FI 104s, with next generation fuel injection and coils replace cap and rotor.
