OIL EXTRACTOR NOT WORKING DILEMA !
I am attempting to do an oil extraction on my 2005 C320 Sport Sedan using a topsider Pela Pro extractor. I was able to only extract 2 quarts and no more. Checked all tubing for air leaks or hissing...none found.
Venting the extraction process by ONLY opening and removing the OIL FILTER STEM housing. I DID NOT remove the oil filler cap- oil filler cap was left closed. I could see the oil trying to get out...but only to be sucked back down. There seems to be a venting issue...as I stated I did NOT open the oil filler cap...do I need to do this, to provide maximum venting? Engine oil was very warm, engine run 5 minutes prior to extraction attempt. Any suggestions? Please help! |

Unscrew the cap and look to make sure your small suction line is connected to the base of the piston tube securely and the check valve is positioned twards the top of the unit. I always open the 710 cap to vent.

I don't think so! You should have a 730 cap! If you have a 710 then you have a cheap 'merican replacement!
I don't know about the Pella but my Mity-vac can be persnickety at times regarding the pick-up tube. It's easy to push the tube past the oil pan bottom UP into a U-shape above the oil level. I always measure the dip stick, match the pick-up and then finagle it around just a little until I feel that slight "catch" which tells me I am at bottom. You are using the pick-up tube and not just attaching to the dipstick tube, correct? Last edited by Mike D; 09-16-2009 at 12:31 PM. |

It's best to at least loosen the oil filler cap. The Griot's Garage Liquid/Oil Extractor kit has a wire inside the extraction line to keep the line straight and against the bottom of the oil pan. You may want to compare the quality of the GG oil extractor with the one you're using.

HMMmmm..... Does this engine have a removable drain plug in the bottom of the oil pan?

That's so "old school," there is a chance you might actually get dirty if you used that approach. It's much, much better to spend untold $$$ on a high-tech oil extractor rather then using gravity which, if I am correct, has been around even longer than the automobile.

Give it a break guys. If you don't want to use an extractor then that's fine. Everybody is entitled to use whatever method they choose.
Since neither of you guys use an extractor why would you be commenting on their use? |

I made no comment whatsoever regarding the use of the extractor. I merely asked if the oil pan has a drain plug. It just seems as if it would be a good back up plan in such instances. Silly me!

....the car DOES have a drain plug...and I will be happy to utilize it...as long as you can instruct on how to do so WITHOUT raising the car or removing the bottom engine cover plate. That is the reason for using an
extractor....SILLY ME ! |

Why not just tip the car over on its side, Larry? Wouldn't that work? That's how I drain the oil out of my lawn mower.
