I had this issue with my 1997 E420. As the regulator is NLA. I bought the updated regulator and found a used blower motor from a 2001 E430 for very little money. I was able to get a wiring harness for the conversion from my wholesaler and everything bolted up pretty easily.
The junk yard where I bought the blower motor from had it's inventory available online through a used car parts website where you can look up parts and it will tell you which yards have them. I'm not sure if I can mention the name here. It did not take a lot of effort to make the conversion and although I have sold the car, the guy who bought it is a friend and lives less then a mile from me so we talk often. He's not had any problems with the blower since and it's been about 18 months.

Need more info.
Is there any more info on this? Perhaps a DIY on the subject?
I am hesitant to purchase parts for a mod described nearly 7 years ago using expensive parts today, with out a more detailed description of what to do.

Had a 97 E320 in the shop today with this problem. Will go the route of updating to the W140 regulator. That is kinda nutty that MB wants to change out the blwr/regulator/cover.

My W140 blower regulator has been working fine in my E430 for over 5 years now.

The plastic cover on my blown regulator popped off so I un-soldered the wires from it instead of cutting them off... I tested the new regulator before cutting wires and the plug on the new reg. fits the receptacle on the car... If I had to do it again I would cut the receptacle and a length of the wires from a junk yard donator and attach that to the harness removed from the old regulator to make an extension harness thus removing the need to cut up the new regulator's harness... Thanks to the OP for helping the community save serious money with a simple fix...

Note:
This is NOT optional...
You MUST apply heatsink paste, between the regulator face and aluminum radiator or the new unit Will FAIL... Heatsink Paste https://www.google.com/search?q=heatsink+paste&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&client=firefox-a .
