How many of you have used borescopes for diesel diagnosis?
Hello everyone,
Like the title says: How many of you have used borescopes for diesel diagnosis? I have a chance to buy a good one cheap and I just wonder if it's worth the time effort and money, have to drive 50 miles to pick it up. How useful would it be on our diesels? It's the rigid type and has several rods with fiber optic cable inside. Or would I be better off getting the cheap one from harbor Freight? Would like to hear from persons who have used these, thanks

I haven't used it yet on anything but I just took delivery of one of these:
eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices It's brilliant. I may have to take back everything bad I ever said about the Chinese. The head is about diameter and half the length of an unfiltered cigarette. The focal length seems to be around 3 inches and out. The clarity is great on a PC. You can turn this on and save the inspection as an avi file on your pc and then pause , zoom etc. This belongs on everybody's X-mas list. You can even save money on certain medical exams...

I have a snap on wireless borescope that I purchased when I worked at a mack truck dealership. I believe I maybe have used it about 5 times in over 2 years. Its handy if you use it but if you don't they collect dust. I build large natural gas engines now and I never use it. It sits in my tool box.

It is a camera. It plugs into the USB port of a computer ( for your display). There are 4 led lights in the head that are regulated by the dimmer on the cord. Bring a laptop out to whatever you want to scope out. This one has 2 meters of stiff wire, but there are longer lengths available

For Use on Mercedes it will have to be able to fit down through the Prechamber Hole after the Prechamber is removed.
Used mostly to inspect after some sort of desaster has happend like runing your Engine out of Oil or Overheating the Engine. Or to inspect if something broke loose and feel into the Cylinder.

One can certainly perform an inspection of the oil pump (through the drain plug) and the timing chain through the top. Snake it down your rocker panels (sills) to look for rust, etc. Last year, while changing the timing chain on the 380SL, I inadvertently disturbed one of the vacuum lines that ran off the throttle body that sits deep in the inner regions of the intake manifold of the V-8. I really could have used that then.

Not to worry ... Win98 is USB compatible.
Be nice to have with a laptop when out looking to buy a 'showroom condition' MB too.
