You're right -- Rudy's a good guy, but an even better shop in the same neighborhood is C & H Auto on Irving Park Rd near Sacramento.

Yeah the only thing I can say about Rudy's shop is that sometimes problems pop up after he fixes something. This has happened twice.
I think I might give your shop a try. Do you think they would haven any trouble handling the problem I have been having with my 500SEL? Here's a link in case you don't know: thread

Chicago Body Shops BAD & Good
Phase I Coach Works in Tinley Park = BAD. Quality & workmanship have gone BAD in the last two times I have been there over the last 15 years. They were excellent at one time now they don't care about their customers or workmanship.
Things that I saw that brought me back to their shop after "completion" are: 1- overspray (no clean up) 2- no final buffing out (dull paint) or initially not applied correctly. 3- loose trim (forgot to tighten??) 4- ruining an interior carpet (covered with paint and glue) (then denying it???) having them having to replace. They give to you an excellent "Limited Warranty" for their work once completed. Try to use it though. It's just a piece of paper. Looking for a GOOD and reputible body shop in the Chicago/Suburban area. Any suggestions?? MBE300TB1999, MBE3201994, Millenia1998. |

As someone who spent over 20 in the Mercedes busines in the Chicago area, I can tell you that I've never heard of that body shop, which is a strong indicator that they do not specialize in Mercedes. The finest body shop in the area is across town -- all the way in Barrington, and it's called Body Werks of Barrington. They're not cheap, but their work is absolutely first rate.

I can only tell you that Carlos from C & H had been working at Loeber (big Chicago MB dealer) for many years when your car was brand new on the showroom floor, and was one of their finest techs. He's a dyed in the wool Mercedes guy as opossed to Rudy, who is more a European car generalist.

good Chicago-area service shop
Looking for a good Benz service shop in downtown / North / NW Chicago area. Preferably someone familiar with:
- performance tuning experience - suspension adjustments, maintenance, repair - use of aftermarket parts I have a 1993 300CE coupe (W124 with M104 3.2L motor) -- see pictures at http://www.geocities.com/mcantoria/mc-mbz.html Currently use Mercedes Benz of Chicago (formerly Loeber Motors), downtown for basic stuff. They installed my basic upgrades (suspension -- springs, shocks, swaybars, strut brace; wheels ; exhaust) but are not that friendly towards aftermarket stuff. TIA for any advice. -- Manuel |

Give Carlos a call at C & H Auto on Irving Park near Kedzie. He worked at Loeber for many years. His phone is 773-583-6676.

Is Body Werks affiliated with Motor Werks in Barrington? I have a scratch about 12 inches long on the rear quarter panel that went almost thru to the primer (daughter scraped bike against car) that I need to get repaired.

Body Werks is right across the street from Motor Werks, but there is no affiliation (or even affection).

Shops in Northern Illinois?
Hello friends:
I was curious if anyone had any shops that they used in the northern Illinois area to service their MB? I live in Madison, WI and Gilly takes excellent care of me, but was wondering if there was somewhere here in Illinois that I could go to if I had problems while I was down here at school. The dealership in Lake Bluff is a possibility, but 20-30min. from me. Anything in the Mundelein, Libertyville, Vernon Hills, Lake Forest, Waukegan, Wadsworth area? Thanks for the help! -Michael.

Hi Michael.
I live in the Western suburbs of Chicago, and though I have used various mechanics over the years, there is only one shop that continues to be superb. It's a little be west of you, but if you have major work, I would not take it anywhere else. The shop is "Manfred's Import Auto" 44 South Route 14 Cary, Il. (847) 462-2100 Manfred has had his shop for about 15 years. He normally employs about 4 or 5 mechanics. His lead mechanic is Vince. to this date, they have never missed a diagnosis on any of my cars. His shop rate is less than a dealer, but not a bargain. But, you will get what you pay for. Most important, he is a man of integrity...and he knows the cars. |
