Knowing where not to go is half the job already, that still leaves lots of real estate between NY & Chicago.
Chicago area is where I am looking around.
So, where did Adam go?
And where should has he gone?

I too am familiar with this guy (he's hungarian, not german).
When I bought my 88 190E, I figured this guy could do the standard flushing and refilling of all the fluids like anyone would do after buying a used car. When I got the car back, like yours, it was greased up, and half the work was completed.

From now on, I do all my own maintenance, and if I need major work, I go to Motorwerks...at least they give me the use of a new C230 kompressor while they work on my car. So far I'm quite happy with them (knock on wood).

Chicago Independent MB shops

I can discuss 3 I have worked with.

Axtmann Automotive, 5500 N Northwest Hwy, Chicago, IL 60630-1116 Phone: (773)763-8333 Don
Seems very knowledgeable. Used to build race cars. Works on all makes and models. Usually a few older MB's in the lot. Recommended.

Ilya's Imports Inc., 3360 W Peterson Ave. Chicago, IL
Phone: (773)588-2774 Ilya.
Ex-Local MB dealer 15 years. Seems knowledgeable. Have had good work done there. Works almost always on European cars and always has MB's in the lot. Have +&- but recommended.

Europa Imports, 1007 Tower Ct, Winnetka, IL 60093-1865
Phone: (847)446-9500 John. I have only bought parts. Very booked. Always lots of new and old MB's in the lot, some mint collector models. Sometimes lot is full. Has been very highly recommended to me but I still have yet to have them work on my car.

Good luck.

I get all my MB work done there, and John is very knowledgeable and courteous. Definitely knows what he is doing and all work thus far has been excellent and dependable. Highly recommend.

Several of my co-workers have recommended Chuck's Import Auto on Cass Avenue just north of I-55. Do any of you ChicagoLand members have any input? Otherwise, I'll post my impressions later this week. I still can't find whatever is draining my battery so I'll be taking my 400E to Chuck's for exploratory surgery on Tuesday.

Follow-up: Chuck's did a great job on my repairs. These were minor, but I'll be taking future work there. I took the car in to find a voltage drain in the electrical system. When I couldn't get the car started, I had to have it towed to the dealer (Chuck's is too far away). $500 later the dealership mechanic said I had an electrical drain that they couldn't find. They replaced a perfectly good battery. Chuck's found the drain in a couple of minutes and charged me $50.
BTW - they're on Plainfield between Cass and 75th, just north of I-55. Call for an appointment, though.

Chicago area good and bad

First I'll start off with the good shop. He's basically a diesel guy. The shop is European & American Motor Repair. They are located at 3541 N. Lincoln Ave in Chicago. Their phone number is 773 929 4288. They recently rebuilt the engine on the S350. Very good work.
Now with the bad. Stay away from M&R Car Import Service. When my 500SEL failed the emissions test, I found them in the list provided by the emission facitilty. I went over there and they charged me $157 to just look at my car. They then told me they had to do another $800 in work but they weren't sure that alone would solve the problem. Stay away from them. I should have just taken it to my diesel guy, he can handle other types of cars too.
