Milwaukee Area Shops?

Anybody on the forum from the Milwaukee area? If so, has anyone any experience with Alpine Auto in Glendale? I've had good service from Concours, a bit pricey, but they always have a long wait to get in. I'm looking for reputable alternatives. I don't care to go as far as International Auto. Thanks

Chicago/Milwaukee area shop to do 240D manual trans converesion

I have an '82 MB 240D in rust free condition (CA car) with a recently installed reman. engine shipped all the way from Berlin. Car has 375,000 miles on it and I am the 2nd owner after my brother in law. I would like to convert it to manual 4 speed transmission if possible -does anyone know of an excellent shop in the Chicago/Milwaukee metropolitan areas that has done this work before and could get the parts? According to comments on the diesel discussion site, this is a straightforward operation for a qualified technician.

South of Madison, Wis., there's a shop called Brooklyn Motoren Werke, run by Albrecht Stachel. I don't think there's much Albrecht doesn't know about MBs. He specializes in high-end restorations -- a walk through his shop (several buildings, actually, the site of an old windmill factory) is like a trip to a Mercedes museum. Still, I've found him reasonable enough price-wise for me to bring in my old 250/8 for some carburetor work.

The one flaw -- he's in great demand, and his calendar tends to be backed way up. This is not a place to bring a car in for an oil change, but if you want a vehicle fully sorted out you won't find a better wrench.

Good PPI in Chicago

Had Carmine Burdi of Burdi's Motor Works in Schiller Park (Chicago) do a PPI for POS E320 wagon. Spotted things I hadn't noticed when I looked at it. Charged $75 which included driving out to western suburbs to go check it out. Gave good advice and good valuation of the beast including cost breakdown of possible repairs and alternatives. Spent lots of time going over options with me.

Recommended.

New Zimbrick European Service Center for Mercedes coming in summer, 2006

Hi friends -

I received a mailing a few days ago from Zimbrick European. They are building a new service center about one mile south of the current one. It is my understanding that it will just be for Mercedes - Audi, Porsche, Saab will remain at the current location. Sounds like a nice place they're putting together.

They have really raised their labor rates from when I remember using them with my 190E. They charged $411 for spark plug replacement, air and fuel filters. $580 got me a "B" service, coolant and brake fluid flush. Maybe these prices are on target - I dunno. Seems kinda steep though. FWIW.

-Michael

In Milwaukee ( Glendale ) I've had service done at both Alpine Auto and Black Forest Benz. I rate them both highly. They are both considerably less expensive than my experience with the dealer on Silver Spring.

Impressed with Black Forest!

Well ... after that post, I just had to do some sleuthing on these folks, and came across a VERY impressive web site. If their site is as good as the service they provide, I'm very much impressed already!

FYI: BlackForest's web site is: http://www.blackforestllc.com
