Good independent in Minneapolis
I am looking for a place to take my 1982 280e for brake work and transmission (maintenance) service in Minneapolis or western suburbs. It is just too cold for me to attempt anything major in my unheated garage. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Well it's not too cold now I asked the same question about independents in Minneapolis about a year back. No reply. Since then, I've come across three places in the west suburbs. I drive by them all the time. Mauer's in St. Louis Park off HW 100, another place off 394 and another off Excelsior just east of 169. The next time I drive past I'll make sure to get a name and phone number.

I was visiting my parents over the holidays and drove by Mauer's-- man o'-- they have some nice MB's in the show room -- a 230SL, 50's vintage 300 convert and a few others.

Ted, did you see that Rolls Royce in there as well? I think it's circa 1976 and some kind of cream color.

Hey Kuan,
Nice... I missed that one. We were driving by on Christmas Eve night, coming back from Kenwood where my aunt lives... I'll have to stop by next time I'm in town, -- this summer? Regarding shops in Mpls, there's that outfit on Exclesior Blvd. on the right side as you head towards the lakes. "German ********", (??) or something to that effect, don't recall the name. I always saw Audis in the lot, not too many MBs. Perhaps Deeph8 can look into that one. When I lived in Mpls and had a Saab 900 I took my car to a group of great mechanics, they worked on some pretty nice cars: Ferraris, RRs, MBs, Porsches you name it. My Dad took his cars there for many years -- Located in a St. Louis Park, kind of hard to find. I'll do some searching and get the name for Deeph8! |

I had my Dad look into that shop in St. Louis Park (behind Methodist Hospital) and it's now in the hands of another owner who *only* works on BMW's ): I think the name is "Otts" or something to that effect. The original owner (under a different name which I still don't recall) was Gene Anderson, helluva mechanic. We don't know what happened to his biz, a shame really as he had a 2 excellent mechs working for him.

I know of a shop...
I know of a shop in Minn/St.Paul that is good. It's owned by my uncle, who's name happens to be Kuan as well. He's in the middle of purchasing a new shop right now and will hopefully be open soon. If you guys are interested let me know and I'll pass on the address so you can check it out.

Huber's Imported Car Service
For about 8 years, I've used Huber's Imported Car Service and have been very pleased. Warner Huber is the owner along with his wife, Cybel, who runs the paper side of the business. Their son, Chris, also works in the business and is Bosch certified in many categories.
Huber's is located in Golden Valley on Pennsylvania Ave., 1/2 block north of Hwy. I-394. Their telephone number is 763-546-2586. Huber's treats you like family, is very experienced with Benzs of all vintage including diesels. They are honest, use proper parts and service techniques, and have years of experience to draw upon. While Mercedes seems to be their highest volume, they also service Audi, BMW, and Porsche. Motor On!

Ted - Huber's Imported Car Service was started by Warner's uncle (the business was called Holzer's then) and was located near the old Breck Ice Rink on I-394. The old Holzer's building has been torn down now and a micro hotel of some type built on the property. I believe Warner worked for his uncle when he first imigrated to the states then went out on his own when his uncle retired. I believe Huber's has been around 20 years.
Thanks Kuan, I just came home from a meeting in Plymouth - nice area. I like your Guiness thingy dingy and have admired it several times - it says it all!

Thanks Wayne,
I remember Holzer's-- it's great they are keeping it in the family. That area has changed so much and everytime I go out that way (west on 394) there are new strip malls or office parks. I was up there a few weekends ago and couldn't help but notice Carousel's new Audi dealership, it's quite impressive!! |
