1990 W124 300E For Sale

I've decided to part company with the Benz. I have come to the conclusion that it's probably not the best car for me. I drive quite a bit and I'm also quite anal about cars and their functionality so I'm going to let someone else enjoy the ups and downs of 17 year-old Mercedes ownership. Maybe it's ok to plan on $100-$200 a month for minor maintenance but none of my other vehicles require that and I'm just not prepared to accept a car that does.

Purchased Oct 2005 with 123,781 miles. I have replaced engine mounts, rear brake pads, fan clutch, distributor cap, rotor; wires, belt tensioner, speedometer head, flushed brake system, flushed cooling system, front drag link then front end alignment....there's probably more but this is from memory. I'll update as necessary.
I have used Amsoil synthetic fluids in the whole car from the start. It has Yokohama tires with about 20K on them and they are in great shape. Everything works except the rear window defogger and the right rear window and I haven't attempted to fix either. It runs great and gets 23-25 mpg on the highway. I always used premium fuel unless the weather was cold then it got mid-grade.
The bad: Cracked windshield. Started as a rock chip and the first cold day it spread. The air pump bearings went bad so I took the dang thing off and put a shorter belt on. Much quieter. The air conditioner compressor developed a leak. Not sure exactly where but my indy sniffed the whole system and it is not leaking at the evaporator but it pegged the sniffer right at and above the compressor. Before the leakdown it performed reasonably well. I purchased a replacement compressor from a forum member but as yet have not installed it.
I have pictures and will be glad to e-mail them or if I can figure out how to post them I will. It's rainy today so I'm not sure how they turned out. I have the car consigned at a local lot but am under no contract so can pull it from the lot if I sell it elsewhere. I trust the car to drive it anywhere.
Current mileage is 168,231. I am asking $4000 and will include delivery to within a 500 mile radius of 73703; more for a small price.

54 looks with no replies. Am I too high? Because that's negotiable. Am I too far away? Speak up everyone! It's a great car for someone with a little more time than I have.

Seems a fair price if negotiable, but perhaps this sentence has spooked potential buyers:

"Maybe it's ok to plan on $100-$200 a month for minor maintenance..."

I don't spend that for maintaining my '95 E300D, but then...maybe I should.

Good point. I guess I should clarify that statement. I don't anticipate that anything will go wrong with the car in the near future but in the two years that I've owned it it has cost me roughly that amount. Part of it is the fact that I'm anal and won't drive a car that's not well maintained and nearly totally functional and we all know that it's expensive to keep an older Benz well-maintained and functional. Also the fact that I drive nearly 2500 miles per month plays a part.
The car has never left me stranded and will make someone a great ride but I've decided to go back to a GM product (1997 LeSabre) for my daily driver. I have owned two Bonnevilles and an Olds 88 LSS in the past and they have all been great cars albeit without the Benz driving experience and panache. Hopefully it will cost less to operate the Buick than the Benz. And if something does go wrong there are more choices for mechanics and sources for parts.

First off--I personally would even post a picture (or two) of the car. Also, since I am close to you-- I want to see what the car looks like

Secondly, I would consider fixing the windshield before selling the car. This is a major safety issue and not expensive to fix (~$200 at the most if you shop around). You wouldn't want to get a $100 ticket for a broken windshield just delivering the car. If you plan on coming thru Kansas, please be careful as the Troopers watch for broken windshields like a hawk.

Thirdly, I would also consider having the a/c repaired properly before your sale... A car is worth $500-1000 less with non-cooling a/c in my opinion. Since you already have the compressor, the cost should be minimal. This will help you get close to your asking price.

Good Luck with the sale, sounds like a nice W124...

Would you consider trading for my daughter's '94 Olds 88 w/ ~80,000 (her grandmother's) miles?

What?? Still no more responses??

After nearly 350 looks and all the praises for the 124 model and the M-103 engine on this forum, something has to be amiss. Am I way too high? Too far away? I know this forum isn't the best place to sell a car but I thought I would have had more interest or input.
The price and delivery options are negotiable. I don't want to take a worse beating than necessary (I have about $7500 in the car) but I do need to sell it and I want it to go to a good home so let's start some dialogue.
Thanks.
Chuck.

You are probably priced too high.

I bought my '92 400E w/ 130K one-owner miles for $4500. The car has been garaged its whole life and the only thing I had to do was replace the fan clutch. Interior looks like new.

At $3K yours would be a decent deal but you'll never sell the car w/ inop A/C.

you could probably get 3500 if you had working a/c and a good windshield...

I have paid 4800 for the CE with 124k
paid 3400 for the E with 149...rebuilt engine and A/C (receipts)
paid 1326 for the 260E with 206

everything was up to working speed when i bought these cars.

I don't think i overpaid or underpaid.

All points well taken.

Thanks for the input. I will probably set out after the first of the new year to replace the a/c compressor and windshield. That is if it doesn't sell in the meantime. I'll resurrect this thread or start a new one with the updated info.
Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and has a Happy New Year. Watch out for the drunks on "Amateur Night".
Chuck.

Arrow Nice automobile by the way.

You could get the $4000 asking price if the a/c and windshield were repaired/replaced. If you don't get that price, hold onto it for a while, keep advertising and I'm sure someone will buy it, and if you had to go $3500 and meet the new buyer at the airport, I believe I would sell it.

Nice automobile by the way.
