Somebody, anybody? Please? |
I know what you have here
OMG, what a beautiful, rare car. I once drove a '92 near San Francisco, and NEVER forgot the ride.
Safe, powerful, user friendly. Never having even been in one, within 5 minutes I was slicing and dicing traffic safely at 115 mph. A car to keep for a lifetime, and this one is an ultra rare euro version of it. I feel really tempted, but would have to dispose of my '91 SEC AMG (also rare) to do it. |
Damn, that is a fine car Brodie.
If I hadn't just bought a second house (yes, I am the *fortunate* owner of two homes at the moment), started full renos, and about to move the family to a new city, and live in eastern Canada - I would likely buy it. :D Argh, it's killing me. Someone buy it. Please. |

And yeah, I let a guy I know, who owns a Veyron, drive this, after of course I got to drive his toys, and he said it was amazing and so damn solid. He owned one when he lived in New York years back but never got to drive it much and he missed it dearly once he drove mine. I was this "-" close to getting him to buy it but he didn't have anymore garage space hahaha. Quote:
But yeah, if I was you I'd have higher priorities than getting another epic car to tool around in. Thanks for your enthusiasm and compliments tho. Thanks everyone, please, get the word out!!! |
Someone had to type it in

I notice that this car was converted from R12 to R134a.
Does the a/c blow ice cold? I've converted a car (a Nissan) from R12 to R134a before, and the results were so bad I had it converted back. |

Someone buy it before it's pressed into livery duty

Bump!
I had a sale pending the last few weeks but there are cashflow issues right now for him so I wanted to make sure everyone knows it's still available. And in Hawaii it's a law that cars must be converted to r134a, and I can tell you that even in this climate, with black leather, I stay cool in there, I usually keep the fan set at "1" and I'm fine, never had an issue or complaint about the manual HVAC I have. Oh, and she'll never see cab duty here, there are lots of nice cars that do it here, I saw a new Bimmer 7ser the other day, and even an S55, but not my baby, besides, the rear seat kinda prevents it, that wood rolltop box that takes the place of the center seat, along with the contours of the Recaro rear seats prevent a third rear passenger. So yeah, BUY IT! |

Hang in there... I've been trying to figure out a way to buy it, store it, and drive it in the summer only...I'm not quite there. Although, if it stays for sale much longer, I'll kill someone, take their cash, and buy it. Did I mention I love this car? |

While I wait for your video to load, I'll respond with this: my wife tells me all the time that I have an extremist personality, that is, I enjoy doing things at opposite ends of a given spectrum. For example, she made a resolution this new year to read one book a quarter calendar year - a fine goal. I decided to read two books per month - one fiction and one non fiction - just to see if I could keep it up all year. If all goes well, I'll move from that and onto knocking out my list of "supertexts," which includes everything from all Shakespeare's writings to the Koran. Such it is with cars as well. I needed a fun hobby and decided on working on cars. Since nobody I knew had a diesel, not to mention a 25 year old diesel, I decided on the 300D, just to see if I could do it (jury is still out). And so, now I'm looking for the opposite end of this car spectrum. Since I have a new love affair with everything Mercedes Benz, the 500e is my logical choice (is it not?). I'm a sick, sick dude. |

So...yeah....it's a LITTLE faster than my 300... What better car to learn how to drive at speeds above 120mph? |

But yeah, someone, please buy her, I've had a few close buys in the last week alone, it's getting annoying to be so close to a sale then their finances fall apart, it's gotta be the 10th time it's happened now. |

$2k for enclosed transport coast to coast is cheap. Last time I got a quote, I think it was over $3k. Only idiot buyers would back out due to a $2k transport charge. You have to figure transport into the price of the car. So the car ends up being $16k instead of $14k? Waaaaaaah! They can keep driving 300E's instead of the ultimate 124. Their loss, not yours. I've seen a number of 500E's and E500's in the $20-$25k range recently. Your price is definitely within reason. Maybe thanks to all the flakers, you'll be able to keep the car after all!
:thinking2 |
I'm not saying that's expensive for the transport. For enclosed coast to coast transport, that's not alot. I paid $800 from Cincy to Philly.
|
And remember, in the $14k asking price I'm including West Coast shipping, which is about $1000, so really I'm just asking $13,000, so with shipping you're looking at $15,000. The only other federalized euro 500E I've seen for sale is going for $34k right now, and it's boring black, not Brilliant Silver Metallic ;)

Ah no, thats the one, I just typed the $43k backwards, but yeah, insane price huh? Probably because if the guy is the original owner, or bought it from the original owner he probably had to pay for the cost of federalization, which I've heard can be as high as $40k alone. Luckily I'm the third owner, original owner was a Porsche exec who retired here and brought it with him, had it federalized and all, he passed away and his son sold it (after driving it around for a couple years) to a guy I met and bought it from later. |

The people that make comments on the bring a trailer website always seem to be pretty high on the 500E. You could try emailing the website to see if they are interested in putting the car up. I hope your car finds a good home.

Brodie,
I'll be in Hawaii on the 24th and 25th. I'd like to see the car. I could provide a first hand account of the condition of the car that I could provide here on this thread. I'm going to put a separate post to see if anyone wants to meet for dinner on the night of the 24th or 25th in Honolulu or Maui. |

I have a question for those in California. What kinds of hoops will I have to go through to get this car registered in California and what "issues" will I have with the every other year smog check?
What kind of mileage do people with these 500s get? |

D'oh, I forgot about the smog issue. You are right, that could be a hassle. But if it passes the sniffer test, and visual, I don't think they can do much. The car should have catalysts, so it should be ok as far as emissions are concerned. But it would be nice to have someone else chime in who has a gray-market car (with Euro VIN) in CA, who could tell us what happens at smog time. Dang, I like living in a state / county without annual smog checks!
BTW - my 500 gets 16-17mpg around town, and 21-22 on longer freeway trips (best was 23mpg with the stock tires on a 500 mile trip). :zorro: |

Yesterday I gave Paul (suginami) and a friend of his a real good look and drive of her, real nice guys. I hope he chimes in here with his thoughts or emails anyone who contacted him pretty soon, I know he's traveling right now so shouldn't be too long. Thanks everyone. |

I liked the car, and if I was in the market for a 500E, I'd probably buy it for what he's asking. I think $13,000 is a fair price. The problem is that is exactly what he wants for the car. If it were me, I'd ask in the $15K range, and negotiate down to $13K so the buyer thought he was getting a good deal. What makes this car particularly unique is that it is a Euro car, with all of the things that U.S. cars don't get. Brodie claims it is one of two Euro 500E's in the U.S. It has the Euro HVAC dials, which are great. It has the vacuum assisted head light adjustment switch, with all of the hoses still intact. All you need is Euro headlights, hook up the hoses and you're good to go. It struck me as an honest car that has been properly maintained. In particular, the upper and lower wiring harnesses have been replaced, along with the starter and its wiring harness, as well. Those items aren't cheap. The transmission has also been rebuilt, which probably cost a pretty penny. It drove fine, although the exhaust was too loud for my taste. The Euro exhaust apparently has 3" pipes, and along with the catalytic converter delete, had a loud rumble from inside the car. The pics show the exterior condition well, except for the clear coat glazing on the roof. It has very fine, clearly defined clear coat scratches on the roof. I don't believe they will buff out, but can probably be minimized with polish and a good wax. But they are still there. I can't comment on what the car needs mechanically, if anything at all. I would still recommend someone taking the car to an independent Mercedes mechanic if they plan on purchasing the car. This is a car that was built in 1991 and has over 100,000 miles. It might need something to make it into perfect condition. |
Thanks Paul,
I'd like to qualify the rarity of the euro 500E's with "that I know of" and "fully Federalized" from what the rest of the 500E community has been able to find and let me know about. Being that it cost something between $40-$50k to federalize one of these cars from Europe it was just WAY cheaper to buy a US model. And they ran more expensive in Europe to begin with, so you're looking at a $130-$140k car in 1993 money, just crazy. The pictures I guess don't show the roof too well, and I had just removed all the wax only a few weeks ago from the car to start on a full detail sometime soon, so they look a little more noticeable, that and Paul is a whole head taller than me his angle of approach is a little different hahaha :D but yes, it is something that can be marginalized with a serious detail and also since it's between the roof rain rails it could easily be repaired with a wet sanding and fresh clearcoat spray by a shop without much trouble. The only other work that my tech has suggested is the front wheel bearings soon. This is the same tech that has worked on the car since it came to Hawaii in 1993 so he knows it very very well. There's a bit of a hardly noticeable whine coming off the drivers side bearing once the car warms up and the wheel gets put under load, either from a hard brake or sharp right. My tech says it's nothing to worry about and can be addressed in the next year or whenever I do the next full service. I'm selling her at a substantial loss, and I deeply appreciate Paul taking the time out of his trip to help out any buyers out there who aren't able to make it in person. I hope this leads to a sale soon! Thanks! |
Brodie, does your car have the Euro exhaust without catalysts? While that's yet another cool feature, it also could cause problems for anyone who has to get the car past a tailpipe sniffer smog test (i.e., California). Wouldn't be an issue in most of Idaho, as only a couple counties have any sort of smog check. The good news is, the catalysts are the same as the 400E, so a buyer could score the pipe with catalysts fairly cheap (I know of two different people currently parting out 400E's, and the exhaust is available on both).
BTW - I know of at least four, possibly five, Euro-spec 124.036 cars legally registered in the USA. They are awfully rare though. :hat: |
Are you talking about catalytic converters? It is illegal to sell those used; you would have to buy an entire car for them.
