FS 1991 300D W124 2.5L Turbo

Well I have decided the wife's car is going up for sale, $2600 or BRO since the Climate Control or blower died. Not sure which.

Car has 204,000 miles, new Yokohama Avid GT tires with about 6,000 miles, Just installed rebuilt alternator with new voltage regulator this week. It has a new rebuilt transmission installed two years ago or about 7,000 miles ago. All vacuum lines replaced with synthetic long life tubing, all new brake lines, new fuel lines. Has new a/c thing that's in front of the new radiator, new RR tail light assembly, also replaced one of the front ones but don't remember which. Installed new Glow Plug's and new injectors that were pop tested and balanced last summer. Has Optima Red top Battery that's 2 years old. Also new fuel tank screen, and all spare oil filters (2) and fuel filters (?) will go with he car. The car has been running on Mobil 1 5W-40 T&SUV oil since spring, prior to that it was mobil 1 0W-40 in winter and Mobil 1 15-50 in summer. The car has a coolant heated windshield washer tank that holds a gallon and a half of fluid and has new windshield wiper.

Location is Poplar Bluff, MO I can be reached at oldnavy6393@gmail.com send an email with phone # and I will call you if you need more info. I can send current photo's if interested.

Any rust or body work? What shape is the interior? My wife's next car will be a w124 2.5, so I'm always on the lookout for a nice one.

No rust on the car, has some parking lot dings, slight dent in door (grandkid fell against door that would probably pop out with suction puller, wife has back into something (she says not) twice, dented trunk lid one time and broke tail light the other, place on trunk where the late tom cat slept, no chips in windshield and it the original with the sticker.

This car is in great shape, but has some small problems that are no big deal to fix it you are handy. Even the a/c would be a easy fix if I was ten years younger, but the heat stoke I had in last week of Aug or first week of Sept has ended my wrenching days of any kind. It took me all day to install the new alternator that 5 or 10 years ago would have taken be 30 minutes at most, so as I say my days are done tinkering on cars.

I bought the wife a '02 Ford Escort ZX2 Coupe one owner garage kept (like our MB's) with PS,PB, AT, A/C, AM/FM with tape player, new tires, and they changed the tranny, engine, and brake fluids today for the deal and only gave $6000 for the car. The car could pass for new as it has no dings or dents, but the wife will remedy that problem in first week I bet. ;)

If I was the daily driver of this car I could tell you more about it, but last time I dove it was two years ago I think. I will ask wife about any problems with car other then the radio died this spring, but the tape player works fine. Never heard of that in a car, I thought the tape players always died first.

Whe a car is 18 years old and with 200,000 miles on it, it will be a tinker car be it MB or FORD.

Hey Walt -- bummer that you have to part with the '91; I remember your posts when you found her! If you have any piddly work that needs done and you need to make a commissary run when I happen to be down at Scott AFB, drive her over and I'll turn the wrench for you. That's a nice looking W124. Someone would do well to snatch her up!

Hey shipmate how you doing? Been a while since we chatted. Hey I will be in Scott for a meds run on Monday, probably go to exchange and look around and maybe go to the commissary for batteries.

Bought the wife a little Ford puddle jumper today, a one owner Ford Escort ZX2, 2dr Coupe, A/C, PS, PB, AT, CC, alloy wheels, AM/FM/tape and with only 22,000 miles on the car.

I just had drill... won't be back down until December at this point. Need to catch up with you some weekend, though, and shake hands. Good luck getting the car sold; someone will be getting a nice one!

oldnavy 11-11-2009 03:03 PM

Thanks for the kind words, we are going to have to make it date one weekend for sure.

I have decided to make a video of the car and if I can post it on photobucket or here if I can. Will try to get it done tomorrow if I, but may be Friday.

Beautiful car.....if only I had the $$$ I want a 300D 2.5 badly! That car is literally the diesel clone of my 300E.....same color and interior....except the motor! (not that the M103 is bad, just thirsty) :D

Email sent (to personal account) on behalf of my parental units.

Thanks!

I have a HS buddy with one and that is his comment. Other than that he can't believe the quality and longevity of these cars, he is still on original brakes at 279,000 mile mark and mine has originals also and look almost new.

I figure the little Escort I bought the wife will need a brake job in about 10,000 more miles if it goes that far, its doors sound like tin cars dropped on the garage floor.

Tempting, tempting. How long is the drive down from St. Louis?

3 hrs (allowing for traffic and in no hurry) from airport if you come down I-55 S. and then take the US 67 S. exit straight into Poplar Bluff. I have driven it in 2.5 hours many times and I have driven it in 4 hrs when I left the city on wrong day and time. Us 67 at Fredricktown or Farmington not sure which, but there is big sign for the highway and at that point you are about 65 miles from my house.

Send me an email if you want to come down and see the car.

Video is made, will try to figure out the transfer to laptop, it may be ready by to night or tomorrow. This is a first for me.

... and they protect as well also. I got a call just last night for an accident, Accord cut in half by a Suburban, the dash-forward was roughly 2 car-lengths away from the rest of the wreck.

THAT's why I drive Mercedes. Worth a little more fuel.

If her W124 was only 8 years old and only had 23,000 I would be keeping it, but at 19 years and 204,000 it is a tinker car regardless of brand and type.

I have the movie made and am trying how to figure how in the world to get it in the computer. When I do and get it up to Photobucket for viewing I will post a link here.

oldnavy 11-14-2009 03:07 PM

Here is the first file I have been able to get up loaded, man is these files slow to up load. I will be putting a couple more up today, but the one with the walk around and starting the car while hood up is 441 MEG file and Photobook only allows about have that size for each video file. If I can figure how to break it up I will up load it, but looks like I may have to redo that photo shoot.

Link to view trunk and spare.

Link to interior view.

More interior of gages while engine running.

oldnavy 11-14-2009 07:08 PM

I am still working on the full walk around and starting the engine with hood raised.

Wish me luck, it's suppose to rain tomorrow and all next week here.

oldnavy 11-15-2009 07:44 AM

Well unless anyone wants a 441 meg move sent to them I am redoing the video today if I can (so foggy out now can't see 30 feet) and will do it in two or three clips.

Someone from the ShopForum?

oldnavy 11-15-2009 01:16 PM

I believe so, but he said a friend on the forum told him about the car. However the buyer sent me a PM about the car so he is a member, but not sure how long. I just talked to him on the phone this morning and he said he would take the car. He is near Wichita Kansas, so it would not be like driving to NY or CA for sure.

TylerH860 11-15-2009 02:16 PM

Yup, Old Navy owes me a commission.:D Daniel, also known as Greenuncle, is the lucky new owner. I believe Daniel is planning on making this his highway cruiser, and it will be his first "modern" Mercedes. This is his third purchase from a forum member. The first was me with Trigger, a 1982 300TD, and the second from Mr. Kenny, a very nice W116 300SD.

I really look forward to seeing this one.

When do I get my cut, Old Navy?:D Also, I do believe he's planning on having it shipped.

Cut!!! Obvious he does not know my wife. :o

She already is talking about tinting the windows on the new car, etc.

Me I'm kind of leaning toward buying a extended warranty for the car and never have to worry about the thing myself. I checked here local $1300 to $1500 for one of the better warranty packages, but will need to check on the internet for some other's.

As I said here and in the video's it is not a perfect car by any means, but it is one that would be great to restore or spend a few bucks on and have a very nice daily driver with lot of years of service to the new owner. However I told him like any 20 year old car it needs someone who can do the tinker work, other wise one of these old cars will eat you up in repairs.

greenuncle 11-15-2009 11:26 PM

Yes, many thanks AGAIN to Tyler for feeding my seemingly bottomless addiction. You are a prolific matchmaker and surrogate father to many.

Thanks Old Navy for working with me to get this puppy shipped out. I am looking forward!

Daniel

I was trying to get somebody to pull the trigger on this car, but they snoozed and they loosed..........:(

Well the only looser here is me I guess, seeing how much I put into the car after buying and then almost killing myself working on the car. But most of us here will never come close to making a profit on the sale of a car, but that is life I guess.

My selling price was based of the amount of money I put in the car, not what I paid for the car or even market value. I based it on repair dollars spent, and this morning realized I undershot the mark about a $1000 at the very least. It was the cost of transmission that got me, I was thinking $1300 but correct figure was $2300, seems age and senility has again raised its ugly head. I was thinking $2600 was not to bad for almost 2 1/2 years of driving, but this morning that figure jumped to $3600 and that is not counting the original cost of the car. Now I don't feel so good about selling the car, except I will not have to look at the car that I almost killed myself over in my garage a few months ago.

Oh well it's only money, and you can't take it with you when you die. And I am not leaving any behind for the guy that might replace me, or a unappreciative kid. :D

retmil46 11-16-2009 12:47 PM

@#$%^#!!!! If I'd thought to check the forum one week earlier!!! Just started looking to find another in decent shape to have down here in Texas, and let my sister and her hubby keep the replacement '87 and wrecked parts car up in NC - the replacement '87 needed the dash pulled for a vacuum pod replacement, not something I'm equipped to do down here right now. And a car without A/C in Texas is undriveable.

Well I started to PM you last week, but got to thinking you would not want another tinker car. But what do I know, I am just a retired squid. ;)

The guy that got the car is I am sure going to enjoy a lot of miles of motoring down the road, to be sure. Wish I still had by code reader to clear the code to turn off that ABS light, I never understood how MB could come up with the idea to use the ABS light for other things like low voltage to battery, and couple other things it lights up for besides the ABS. I mean how much more would it have cost to put in an idiot light as used on most cars???

oldnavy 12-05-2009 11:17 AM

Well the wife's little Ford Escort ZXR2 went 193 mile and used 9.2 gallons for 21 MPG in city. :( Her MB averaged 25/27 MPG depending on season.

Now that means we lost about 15% in cost of operation.

Man getting into that car from my Benz and driving the Ford is a trip. That is about the closest thing to my old '31 Ford Model A that I have ever driven for ride and noise levels, and the A I think had a better ride. :D

Just found the MB certificate for Mileage and badge award and if Dan see this if he would send email or PM with address I will send it to him.

On another note it was 17F this AM at 6:30 with 87% humidity outside.
